Valkyries first appeared in year 309 of the First Age. They were originally created to ferry fallen warriors to Valinor after they died, but a handful of valkyries defied their original purpose and fled to Middle Earth, where they settled in the North. They became known as "Wind Walkers".
The Wind Walkers aided the other races in overthrowing Morgoth at the end of the First Age.
In the second age, valkyries slowly became lesser known until most races considered them fairy tails. However, when Sauron rises, they join the fight against him. After Sauron is defeated, the valkyries return back to the north.
