⠀⠀penelope was never very religious. she didn't go to church. she didn't really pray. she didn't believe in some magical kingdom after death.
⠀⠀but right now the only possible answer to this disastrous situation is that god has risen again and decided to smite her with batarangs and cute caffeinated boys. like seriously? why else would some rich teenager from a private school post cheesy comments if not for divine intervention.
⠀⠀her hands twiddle with her rainbow loom bracelet ( sunshine had gotten it for her in the sixth grade ) and the air in her room feels stale. despite her joking texts penny is in fact terrified. she knows she's good at clearing her trail - how else does she never get viruses on the college textbooks she pirates? but the difference between stealing an outrageously expensive book on statistics and having a stolen netflix account hooked up to a vigilante's credit card are two very different things.
⠀⠀day-old clam chowder seems to seep into her pores - spoiled and chunky and stinking of sickly pungent fish. it is thickened with age, making her squirm in her skin like a snake trying to shed its own. perhaps she only feels this way because her room smells of mildew and her posters are stewed in rain that soaks through the sad botanical wallpaper. perhaps these - frankly - uncomfortable feelings have nothing to do with her current situation.
⠀⠀it could have to do with the cobwebs in corners she just can't reach, or the stained green carpet with more memories than her brain can hold. her bed creaks when she moves - wails like the cat that sits on her fire escape for food every morning before she heads to school - and the dresser's paint is scraped into nothing but white and pink stripes like the stratus clouds on the rare - once in a blue moon - sunny day in gotham.
⠀⠀or it could be nothing but her stress.
⠀⠀stress that she could get caught for a dumbass mistake and ruin all of her goals. maybe she could just turn herself in - they'd be understanding considering she is still a minor ... right?
⠀⠀but no, she can't risk that, nor can she risk getting a stain on her permanent record just as she is so close to getting out of this shit town with sunshine.
