Prologue

Tris smiled at her mother, giving her a big hug.  Certainly one bigger than the Abnegation would allow.

Her mother's hands shook as she grasped Tris's fingers, yet she had a firm grip.

"You did well, Tris.  You did well.  But you still have one more choice to make.  You could come with me and your father, and nobody would fault you for that.  But you could also stay back.  Try again.  Hope for less casualties."

Tris arched an eyebrow.  "Stay back?"

"Think of it as a do-over, a chance to right what's wrong.  Maybe even save a few lives."

Relief coursed through her body, running through her veins like water through a sieve.

Tris nodded, a faint smile tickling her lips.  "I think you know what I have to do."

Her mother gave a faint nod in affirmation before kissing her once on the head.

"Be safe.  I love you, Tris."
