After walking miles, you finally arrived at the exam site. Or at least, the phase one site. You looked at the number on the pin that a short green guy gave to you. 'Number 45, huh?' You asked yourself while pinning it to a coat pocket.

None of the other applicants so far met your standards. Most of them looked tough, but you knew they weren't. Every applicant who came in, seemed to be week. That is, until number 99 entered the tunnel. He seemed interesting, you took note of that.

"Hm? Seems you've already got your eye on prey." A familiar voice sounded from behind you.

"Shut. Up. Hisoka!" You growled, not even bothering to look at him.

"My lady, no need to be so rude. As I said before, your words cut me deeply." He stated in a playful tone.

You took out a small dagger from your pocket and pointed it at his neck, "Keep taunting me like that and I'll cut you even deeper."

"Ah, I see." He said before walking away unfazed by your actions.

You sighed and walked to the edge of the tunnel. It was slightly less crowded there, it was also much, much darker. Which is how you liked it.

A plump man in blue gave you a few uneasy glances. You weren't sure on why, but you honestly didn't care. Forgetting about him, you looked for number 99. He was the only interesting one so far.

"Yo, Tonpa-san!" A distinctly familiar voice called to someone.

You quickly turned around to see the one you were looking for, 99, talking to the man in blue. 'Ah, I see...but where have I heard his voice before?' You wondered while taking one last look at him before turning away.

A few more hundred applicants entered the tunnel, making it more crowded. You couldn't stand it, so you walked along the edge of the crowd to a corner. It didn't seem to be occupied by anyone or anything so you sat down in it and relaxed a little. Even though you were relaxed, you kept your eye on people who entered. Finally, they reached the 400s. A blonde boy entered, along with another one my age, and an old looking man.

'Hmm...They look interesting as well.' You noted.

Everyone began following the man with lavender hair. He walked in a rather strange manner. It made you think he wasn't human, although he certainly was.

After a few minutes, the strange man introduced himself as Satotz and that the first phase had already begun. You assumed this was some sort of endurance test, so you didn't question him.

You continued running and heard someone yelling about cheating and giving respect to the hunters exam. You turned back to see who was yelling, and at who. To your surprise, it was the old man you saw earlier. But who is he yelling at? You looked around and noticed the white-haired boy from before, too. They, well the old man, argued until the boy in green interrupted them, "He wasn't cheating." He spoke sweetly.

Number 99 did a cool flip off his yellow and red skateboard and landed beside number 405. They began talking and you ran ahead. Everyone around you seemed uneasy.

"Geez, what happened here?" You muttered questioningly.

You kept running forward, then you reached a lot of stairs. You slowed down a bit to conserve your energy. 'How much longer?' You asked mentally, 'It's been like hours.' You weren't getting tired, just slightly annoyed and very, very bored. You let out a loud, long sigh and kept racing up the stairs.

After another 30 minutes or so, a bright light shown at the top of the stairs. 'Yes! Finally!' You exclaimed in your thoughts while speeding up, not very much, though. Then, a strong wind blew by you. You glanced over to see numbers 99 and 405 racing towards the exit. 'They're so energetic.' You thought.

You took a deep breath when you stopped running. You didn't sweat at all during that.

"Welcome to the Numere Wetlands, also known as Swindlers Swamp." Satotz spoke up from the front of the crowd, "The creatures in this ecosystem feed off human flesh and will do anything to get it. Yes, even tricking you, hence the name Swindlers Swamp. If you wish to reach the second phase alive, stick with me."

"Don't listen to him, he's fake!" Another voice yelled from the side of the building you had just left, "I'm the real examiner! He just wants to eat you, he even attacked me!"

The strange man continued to convince the other examinees until 3 cards were shot at him. They pierced his skin, making beautiful red blood run through his shirt. He dropped dead and vultures swooped down to peck at his corpse.

You turned your head to Satotz, who held 3 cards in one hand. He looked at Hisoka, who was smiling.

"I will take that as a compliment, but if you try that again you will be disqualified." The lavender-haired man warned.

You walked over to your clown-faced "friend" and started to run beside him, "You're really strange." You stated bluntly.

"Is that so? I was simply confirming my thoughts." He said in his usual mocking tone.

"Not just that, you're always looking looking for a reason to kill people. I guess I'm no different, though. But I don't usually kill the people I torture." You conversed.

"I guess so, but fighting is interesting." Hisoka reasoned while the two of you continued running.

Suddenly, a circle of men surrounded you. You sighed, they weren't worth your time. Besides, they all looked weak and scared.

"Hisoka, you can kill them this time." You told the older man next to you.

"Of course, princess [y/n]." He spoke softly, but still creepily.

"Don't call me that!" You demanded angrily.

"As you wish~" He said throwing a sharp card into each of the men's skulls, "Easy kill."

A bush nearby rustled and you both looked over before approaching it.

"Run!" The blonde yelled at the old man.

"Oh, it's them again." You said with a small smile on your face.

"Them?" Hisoka asked.

"Mhm, I've been keeping my eyes on them. They look...interesting." You informed, your smile slowly turning into a malicious smirk."And if you kill them...You're going to regret it." You added with an insane giggle.

"Guess I'll keep my hands off of them then." He agreed while you walked away, "But 405 is mine."

You're walk turned into a small jog when you reached an area where the fog was thinner. It was now very easy to see. You saw a large, metal gate ahead, at the end of the path. It was closed, of course, and a bunch of applicants seemed to be waiting for something. Maybe the second phase?
