Set between chapters 7-8 of "Starting Over" (after the one shot "tell me a story")
Natasha smiled as she watched Wanda from across the room. The girl looked up feeling her gaze before returning her smile and going back to watching Steve draw on the sketchbook in his lap. She was about to join them when her phone buzzed from its spot on the counter. She glances at the message before heading across the room.
"Hey, baby, you good here for a bit? I have to go meet Maria downstairs to grab some paper work." She asks placing a hand on top of Wanda's head behind the couch. The teen leans back to look up at her in a childish gesture before nodding. "Alright, I'll be back in a bit." Natasha smiles pressing a kiss to the girls for head before she heads towards the elevator. Her stomach feels like it's in knots the whole ride to the office floor. Maria looks up as she enters the conference room, feeling extremely empty with just the two of them.
"You got the papers drawn up already?" Natasha asks as she slides into a seat at the table.
"Yep, just need your signature and it's official." Maria replies. Natasha's eyes scan over the documents, checking for errors or clauses that might cause and end to the one relationship she wants more than anything.
"You need a pen? Why aren't you signing?" Maria chuckles, knowing how eager the woman had been to officially adopted the youngest avenger. "Do you need me to tell you you're making the right choice?"
"No, I just... I want to run it by her first." Natasha admits "I just wanted to have it all ready in case." She adds standing "thanks for getting these so quickly."
"No problem." Maria replies as the spy heads for the door. "And Nat? Congratulations."
Natasha nods in gratitude, blush rising to her cheeks.Wanda watches contently as Steve sketches.
"How did you learn to do that?" She asks, interesting peaking as a beautiful drawing appears on the page.
"When I was younger I was sick a lot, drawing was the only thing I could do that didn't completely exhaust me, made me feel a little more normal." Steve replies nonchalantly
"Can you teach me?" The teen asks
"Of course." He says as he flips to a new page, going through some of the basics. Wanda watches intently, eyes only lifting from the book when she feels a warm presence enter the room. It grows closer until Natasha is sitting on the other side of her. The teen leans over into the woman's embrace.
"What would you like for dinner, Milaya?" Natasha asks as she wraps her arms around the girl
"Can we get chinese?" Wanda asks face lighting up at what has become one of her new favorites.
"Sure thing, kiddo. Wanna join us for dinner, cap?"
"Uh...yeah sure." He says perfecting a line on the book which as morphed into a resemblance of a face.
Steve looks over stopping his drawing to look up at them, watching as their faces morph into the same expression, eyebrows quirked at his response.
"I would love to have dinner with you two, but I thought that was already a given." He admits, reaching over to ruffle Wanda's hair.Once their food has been eaten the 3 have retreated to the living room to curl up and watch a movie. Wanda settles herself in between Natasha and Steve on the couch, feeling more and more tired as the woman combs her fingers through her hair.
"Milaya, do you wanna go to bed?" Natasha asks as she feels Wanda burrow herself further into her side.
"No, I'm okay here." Wanda says as she eases more of her weight on top of the woman, a somewhat childish gesture, needing to be as close as possible. The teen has completely lost attention on the movie even if it is one of her favorites.
Natasha smiles as she feels the girls breathing even out, head resting against her chest. She feels Steve's eyes and looks up to meet them.
"What?" She asks. Natasha looks at him an eyebrow raised in a curious gesture. He'd been spending entirely too much of the movie focusing on the two sitting next to him. Wanda's nearly curled on top of her, a hand fisted around Natasha's, his, their, shirt.
"I... nothing..." Steve replies, yet he reaches out for one of the hands resting against Wanda's back, interlacing his fingers over hers. And there it is again, that stupid flutter in her stomach.
"You sure?" She asks and he nods in response, leaving their hands interlocked.
Once the credits have rolled Natasha manages to get the girl off of her and to her bedroom. The teen wearing a sleepy expression as she's led through the halls. Wanda manages to put her pajamas on and brush her teeth before collapsing again on her bed, Natasha coming to tell her goodnight as she pulls the covers over her.
"G'night, Mama." Wanda mumbles and Natasha places a kiss to the girls forehead before exiting the room.
Steve had taken their bowls and cups back to the kitchen.
"Hey, she out?" He asks as he meets her back at the couch.
"Yeah, nearly fell asleep while brushing her teeth." Natasha laughs, Steve let's out a chuckle. They're an episode into friends, her legs tossed over his lap the minute she sat down, when she speaks again.
"So I had Maria draw up some papers for adoption..." she says and her tone although she is happy shows a level of doubt that she hopes the soldier can't read.
"That's great, Nat." He says, turning to give her his full attention "Hey, this is good. Wanda loves you, she'll be so happy." He adds and she knows he's read her perfectly, when her facial expression doesn't change he removes her legs from his lap so they can sit face to face. The comfort of his hands is now gone but she finds it again when he results in taking her own in his. Natasha looks up at him through her lashes and Steve finds it slightly harder to breathe.
"You're good for her. You're enough for her. I promise." He says squeezing her hands between each sentence. She removes her hands from his quickly resulting in wrapping her arms around his shoulders instead, his arms wrapped around her waist. He doesn't say anything just holds her, keeping his arms around her for as long as she needs.
"I needed to hear that." She admits, face buried in the crook of his neck.
"I'm glad I could be the one to say it."
"Thanks, Steve, really." She says as she pulls away, going to sit back on her side of the couch. He keeps a firm grasp on her, their, shirt and she teasingly rolls her eyes before settling into his side to finish their episode.
They watch a few more and Natasha feels herself drifting to sleep, Steve's warm and she's tired. She could ask him to stay, she wants to, but that might just push them off the deep end into what she has a feeling he was going to say earlier. She wants to tell him to take a risk on her, on them, but she wants better for him, much more than she has to offer. So instead she allows him to say goodnight reluctantly, with a kiss to the top of her head as she watches him head to his floor. She heads to bed as well, hoping to get some much needed rest.Natasha sits up rather abruptly in a hazy state, heart beating rapidly from the nightmare, memory, she just had. It hasn't even been more than 5 hours since she had retreated to her bedroom. Hoping to lull herself back to sleep she turns on Netflix and flips on some home renovation show that makes her feel a little more normal. That's a thing normal people do right, renovate houses? Or have houses to renovate. She hears footsteps in the hall and a moment later Wanda appears through her door way.
"Nightmare?" She asks seeing the girls distraught state. Natasha immediately lifts the blanket for the teen.
"You're okay. I've got you." Natasha says pulling Wanda closer.
"You'll never leave, right?" Wanda asks head resting under Natasha's chin
" I could never leave you, kiddo. You're stuck with me..." Natasha replies running a hand through the girls hair. "Is that what your nightmare was about?"
Wanda nods.
"Wanda, I love you. And I can promise you I'm never going anywhere, not if I can help it." Natasha reminds her "I actually have been thinking about something, that is if you wanted... I know legally I'm your guardian but I'm not your mom, at least not legally. I was thinking we could change that, if you want..."
"Really?" Wanda asks pulling away from Natasha to face her, Natasha's heart feels full at the sight.
"Yeah..." she replies
"Thank you!" Wanda says throwing her arms around the spy.
"No need to thank me, little witch. I want to make this a forever thing." Natasha says wrapping her own arms around the girl, her girl. "You should probably get some sleep, Wands. We still have training tomorrow."
"Thank you Mama, for everything." Wanda replies sleepily. The teenage settles her head on her chest, similarly to how they had been only hours ago. She pulls the teen closer and Wanda sighs contently in her sleep, small smile on her lips. Natasha doesn't think she's ever felt this content.Hey, guys! I hope you all enjoyed this one shot!
