THERE I STOOD, IN THE MIDDLE OF THE RESTAURANT ON A SCORCHING HOT SUMMER DAY WITH MY MOUTH WATERING AT THE PICTURE OF A COOL, WHITE, SWEET SUNDAE CONE.
It cost P17.00. And in my pocket was exactly P16.00.
My mom once told me that I shouldn’t accept being shortchanged at a store because they don’t allow you to fall short on your payment. That thought made me turn and walk away, kissing the ice cream dream goodbye.
Then, right before exiting, I remembered another statement by my wise friend, “There is nothing you cannot get by asking nicely.”
So I decided to give it a shot.
I turned around again, marched right up to the manager at the counter and said, “Miss, I have a funny problem. I have exactly P16.00. Your sundae cone is P17.00.”
Her reply was simple and delightful, “Sure.”
She took my P16.00, gave it to the attendant and said, “Give sir a sundae cone.” Then she pulled out a P1.00 coin from her own pocket and put it in the attendant’s other hand.
I was a happy man.
While waiting for my treat, I had a moment with God. I imagined myself saying, “Lord, I have a dream… it’s what I want… it’s my desire. But this is all I’ve got. It doesn’t seem like it’s enough, but it’s the best I can do.”
Then I heard God whisper to me, “George, I won’t let anything stand between you and your dream. Just come to Me with what you have — and I’ll fill in what’s lacking.”
I used to compare myself to others all the time. I admit that I still do it every now and then. But I realized that just because other people may seem smarter, more talented, or more gifted doesn’t mean they deserve their dreams more than I do. It doesn’t matter how we compare to others or how big or small our gifts seem in the eyes of the world. When we come before God telling Him what we want, offering the best we can give, He’ll reach deep into His infinite pocket of resources and pull out what is lacking. He won’t let anything stand between us and our dreams.
When you think of it, Jesus didn’t demand much from the people He used during His time on earth. Like the boy with five loaves of bread and two fish that fed thousands. And the simple, humble, common fishermen who said yes to Jesus’ call to discipleship and went on to build the Church as we know it today. All it took was their “yes” — and He did great things through them.
Believe in what He’s placed in you, my friend.
He wants to use you to do great, great things.
