I chew on my lip nervously as I wait for Seras to come home to scold me or yell at me or whatever she plans to do. My body is shaking, and it's definitely not from the night air. I sit on the welcome mat at Seras's doorstep and hug my knees tight. There's no telling when Seras will be back.
Whining softly, I rest my cheek atop my knees and try to relax. It's difficult but Seras's dog sniffing and whining at the side gate of the house makes me feel a little better. He's trying to comfort me in his own way and I appreciate it. He's a great companion and Seras is lucky to have him.
My mind shifts from my fear of my future punishment to the stupid thing I did tonight. I shouldn't have let Kit go, no matter how much I liked her. Who knows what she might do now that she's free? Her determination to own the streets and me could come bite me in the butt if I'm not careful. She's a resourceful woman. I'm almost certain she'll find me if she really wants to, and I know she wants to.
Shifting positions, I look up to the sky and mewl. Seras's dog howls as an undertone and I start to howl, too, because it feels right. I howl for Alice and every other death that was caused by Marv's downfall and all the people who effected by those deaths. The other dogs living on the street, and even those living a few streets down, start to echo me like they know my pain. Our animalistic song causes an uproar from annoyed residents and I quiet slowly as to not cause a sudden deafening silence. By the time my howls turn to soft exhalations, the other pets nearby have calmed and stopped making noise. I snuggle my face into my knees and remain still until Seras comes home.
It's not for a few hours at least, but eventually I hear the rumble of her car approaching. My head shoots up and I scramble off the ground just as Seras pulls into the driveway. My feet shuffle and I'm unsure what do with my hands as she slams her car door shut and starts for me. I bow my head as she gets closer but she doesn't even greet me. Grumbling to herself, she pushes past me and unlocks the front door, visibly relaxing when she crosses the threshold. I remain on the doorstep, bent sideways to see into the house. It's lovely to not be peeking in through a window.
"What, are you a vampire?" Seras says, frustration on her face. "You're letting bugs in here. Get inside and lock the door behind you."
My legs start and I rush inside, closing and locking the door firmly behind me. I stay by the door and wonder at the new things I'm seeing. I've never had the opportunity to study Seras's house and it's exciting to be invited in to do so. As my eyes roam over the sitting room to my right, the sound of soft paw pads and nails becomes loud, and I'm not surprised when Seras's dog comes up to me and starts sniffing my legs. We've never been formally introduced this way, and I squat down to give the pup a good scratching behind the ears.
"Get over here," Seras demands from somewhere deeper in the house. She sounds upset and my stomach tightens with worry.
Both the dog and I follow her instruction and we find Seras standing in the kitchen. She's clutching a bottle of scotch, I think, and she's rubbing her eyes forcefully. This is not going to go well. The scent of alcohol is already deep in her so I know this isn't her first drink of the night.
Moving to stand on the other side of the kitchen island, I rest my arms loosely at my sides. "Are you okay?" I ask softly.
Seras slaps her hand onto the island top and glares at me, her eyes red. "Do you have any idea what kind of shit you put me into? You let that woman go and it was damn hard for me to convince everyone that it was for a reason."
My face burns hot and I clench my hands until my fingers hurt. My actions got Seras in trouble. "I'm sorry," I say, frowning as Seras takes a swig from the scotch bottle. "I'll-"
