this bit is kinda as they grow up

"Do you think he was bluffing?" Joshua asked, shifting his schoolbooks in his hand.

"No, I saw them doing laps outside on the field," Samuel replied simply, and Joshua gasped.

"But it's raining!" He exclaimed, then began giggling, and again didn't notice the way Samuel looked at him, and then bit his lip and looked away.

"Well, they deserved it." He murmured and Joshua spluttered and tried not to laugh more.

"Sam! You can't say that!" He whispered, and Sam laughed too.

"Boys! No talking in the hallway!" A teacher hissed as they walked past, and Joshua looked down respectfully, his face falling, while Samuel glared at the teacher over his head.

In fact, the two boys, no matter how close they were, were very different. Joshua was a devout Christian, small, weak, and submissive, always paying attention and acting good and peaceful, a heart of gold. Samuel, however, was different. Although he lived in a very Christian part of time, he was internally questioning the religion, and slowly acting out. Small acts of indifference. He always, always stood up for Joshua when he backed down fearfully, and he always followed it with talks about him sticking up for himself, and the occasional kiss on the forehead.

People often wondered how they were so close, and complete opposite, the witch, and the Christian. Few often wondered if they were getting too close, too close to be natural. But no one dared separate them.

Samuel sighed when they got to Joshua's classroom. He leaned in and cupped his cheek gently, "I'll see you later, ok?"

Joshua nodded fondly and watched him walk off before slipping into his classroom.
