Chapter 4

Joey zooms out onto the road and I look out the window seeing cars driving away from the city. "We did it!" I shout. "We just escaped from a zombie infested school!" Alex gives me a look then says "Zombies are not real!"

"Honestly... I agree with Aylin. Getting bitten then biting other people, no sign of sanity. Sounds like zombies to me" says Syera. "I guess your kinda right." agrees Joey. There's  silence in the car for a few seconds.

Everyone looks away from each other, taking in what was just said. Including me. "So this is it huh? This is the apocalypse..." says Zack. "I guess so..." I agreed. "But what about our families? We need to save them!." says Alex, looking scared.

"Are you- Are you serious?" I ask. "Why would I want to joke about that?" Alex says while gritting his teeth. "Look bud..." says Joey while keeping his eyes on the road. "We all want to go back and save our families. We really do! But we can't..." "Yes we can! We'll go in and out of the city, we won't take long!" says Alex looking desperate. "Right?" "Wrong! You'll just be risking your life and our lives while we look for your family. I'm not doing that. Right after we made a risky escape you want to throw it all away by going right back into danger? No." shouts Joey. Everyone's quiet for a few minutes.

"I'm sorry Alex." I apologise and put my hand on his shoulder because he's in the front seat. He pulls away aggressively and looks out the window. After a few minutes everyone could hear him sniffling. We stayed quiet until Zack broke the silence.

"We need to find a place to sleep for the night." he says looking around. It's only then I realise that it's sunset. The sky is bloody red and it makes me uneasy. "Yeah" Syera agrees. "We're about to pull up on some suburbs. We'll find a place to sleep there. Maybe in a garage" says Joey. Once we get into the suburbs I take a look around and see that it's totally trashed.

"Wait- look at that house!" says Syera while pointing to a house. I squinted my eyes trying to get a better look at it. "What are we supposed to look at?" asks Joey. "The garage door. It's still open. Maybe we can sleep in there?" says Syera. "Yeah she's right. It looks pretty sturdy." Says Zack.

"Alright then, I guess we've found ourselves a place to sleep for the night." says Joey. "Let me back the car into it." As he's about to change gears to reverse I ask, " Wait! Shouldn't we check if there's anything inside the garage?" "Yeah I guess. But who's gonna go check?" asks Joey. Silence. "I can go." offers Zack. But no one else is up for it. "I'll go too." I say. "Okay then. If it's clear just wave to us to come over." says Joey. But I ask "If it's not clear?" "... Run"

Zack and I get out if the car and slowly walk towards the garage. We walk towards it and look inside. Other than a few boxes , there's nothing out of the ordinary. Just as I turn around to signal the others over I hear something move in there. Zack and I quickly turn out heads back and look again.

Something moves again and we slowly back away. My heart rate picks up and I get scared. We hear shuffling noises and I get closer to Zack. He wraps his arm around my waist and pulls me close to him. The creature moves even more and gets closer and closer. We didn't see it getting closer so we just stand there. It comes out into the light and-

It's a bird? Wow... it's just a bird. Zack and I laugh at each other and when the adrenaline is gone I realise that his arm is still around my waist. I blush and slowly pull away. He chuckles.

Zack turns around and signals the others over. Once Joey backs into the garage, we get into the car. "We need to figure out our sleeping arrangements." says Joey. "I'm not moving from here just so you know." says Alex in the front seat. We all roll our eyes. "Yeah neither am I" says Joey while settling into the drivers seat. Zack is sitting in the middle while Syera is by the left window. I notice that Zack is a little uncomfortable with sitting in the middle. Probably because he's so tall. "Hey, we can swap if you want" I tell Zack. "Oh thanks Aylin." He says to me. It feels so good hearing him say my name. I blush, but I know he can't see me because of the lack of light bulbs in here.

We quickly switch places. As soon as I settle into the middle I immediately fall asleep.

                      Zack's pov:
In the car.
I look around the garage checking if we could get attacked by zombies in the night. And thankfully there aren't any windows or cracks in the garage, we're safe. "We need to figure out our sleeping arrangements." I hear Joey say. "I'm not moving from here just so you know" says Alex. "Yeah neither am I" says Joey. I rolled my eyes.

Only then I realise that I am so uncomfortable. But I'll have to suck it up and deal with it. "Hey we can swap if you want." says Aylin. She's so kind. "Oh thanks Aylin." We swap places and I settle in to the window seat. Much better. I look to my side and see Aylin falling asleep already. Wow, she really must be tired. She looks so beautiful asleep. Oh my gosh what am I thinking! I probably look like such a creep just staring at her.

Get it together Zack. But can you blame me? Her skin is so perfect and smooth. She sits like such a lady. Her hair tied up in a messy bun is such a view. She's just so effortlessly beautiful. How does she do it? It's like she's put a spell on me. And I don't like people that easy.

Maybe there really is a first time for everything. I can but stare at her all night. Maybe I will. There's nothing stopping me since I have insomnia. But what will I do? If someone wakes up and sees me awake too what will I say? I need to start coming up with excuses. Maybe I'll say that I needed the bathroom? Nah. Maybe I just randomly woke up? Or I-

Woah... Did she just- She fell asleep on my arm. I don't mind I just... I'm shocked. She's even better looking up close. What's wrong with me?! I just need to focus on sleeping. Lord knows how many times I've tried that. What's the point? I'll just stay up and be on the lookout for any zombies. Maybe my insomnia isn't so useless after all...
