It's a warm day in the dense jungle, and your mother said it was all right for you to collect flowers, but also reminded you to stay close to the house.Just one more, you keep telling yourself. That is, until you get farther from the home than you thought you would.
You however, being an oblivious child, keep backing up into the forest. What you don't realize is, a poisonous snake is already preparing to strike as you unawarely back towards it.
The hiss and rattling of the snake, and your small footsteps, alert the nearby predator. He comes to a stand, hopping onto a closer tree, then leaning away from it as he cocks his head and zooms in on your small form. He spots the snake, wondering how you wouldn't have heard its loud rattling by now.
You take another step back, picking a beautiful red flower as the snake prepares to strike at your head. You turn around just in time, seeing the snake and flinching back as it bares its fangs at you.
It strikes towards your face, and you close your eyes and flinch away, preparing for the pain.
The predator leaps to the ground with ease, landing over top of the snake and crushing its skull with his large palm.
You feel the vibrations of when the predator lands on the ground, opening your eyes to stare wide-eyed at the creature. You look down as he raises his hand, revealing the gory sight. The snake's skull is completely caved in and parts of the bone are crushed into the dirt, its blood and brain splattered on the earth.
You glance up at the creature, him staying in a crouched position. He nonchalantly rubs the blood onto the grass before glancing down at you. Even while he's crouching, he's still slightly taller than you.
You move all of your flowers to your left hand. Using your right hand, you sign to the creature, hoping he can understand you.
'Thank you,' you sign, bringing your fingers up to your lips before pointing them towards him. It's similar to when people blow a kiss to someone, but it's used to mean 'thank you' in sign language.
He tilts his head questioningly, watching your movement intently as you sign the same thing in hopes he'll somehow understand you the second time. He wonders why you won't speak like the other humans, not seeming to know that you're completely deaf.
You puff out your lower lip, looking down at your hands as you think of another way to say thank you. The red flower catches your eye. You pick it out of your bouquet of flowers, remembering that you still had one flower in your hair.
Looking up at the creature, you hand the flower to him, smiling wide as you eagerly wait. He looks down at your outstretched arm, seeing the cold flower in your hand. His head tilts slightly, him moving his gaze back to you.
You point to the flower in your hair, making him look at it questioningly. You point back at the flower in your hand, hoping he'll make the connection.
He stares down at the flower, his mask as blank as his face, wondering what you mean. Finally, he huffs, giving up on the matter, and starting to stand.
You shake your head vigorously, pursing your lips while you think of what to do. Without thinking, you grab his hand, pulling on it gently in an attempt to get him closer to your level again so you can just put the flower in his hair yourself.
His head snaps to your hand, before looking at you.
Growling, he crouches back down, closer to your face this time. You stare into the eyes of his mask, picking up the flower again and showing it to him.
Then, you point to the flower in your hair. He glances at the flower, then back at you, waiting for you to continue.
You motion to the red flower, gently moving it to the side of his face. He turns his head towards the flower, scanning it before turning back to you with a questioning stare. You continue your ginger movements, softly placing the flower in his dreadlocks, like you did with the flower in your hair.
Once it's snuggly in his hair, you gently caress his mask, curiosity filling your mind as you wonder what he looks like underneath. But you dare not remove it, in case he gets mad. He watches your arm from the corner of his eyes with an intense gaze, wondering why you would be so gentle with a creature that just murdered a snake.
But, what he doesn't realize is, you're being gentle with him because you're thankful for him saving you. You move your hand to your lips, signing another 'thank you' while smiling at him.
He brings his hand up to the flower you just placed in his hair, feeling the soft petals. He tilts his head as he thinks to himself.
Could that be your peace offering? He wonders.
Then, he stares into your eyes, gently reaching over and caressing the flower on your head, cradling your face afterwards. Your skin is as soft as the flower, he realizes.
You tilt your head, resting it in his large palm, smiling as you enjoy his warmth. You hope to become friends with this creature because of how kind he's being to you, the complete opposite of how your father treats you.
"Sweetheart?! Sweetie?!" Your mother screams in a panicked voice, mostly to herself, as she scans the forest.
The creature quickly stands up, backing away from your mother as she gets closer to your location. You tilt your head, looking behind you as you wonder what he's looking at.
You spot your mother in the distance, seeing her look around anxiously. Turning back around, you no longer see the creature, just the forest ahead of you. Unbeknownst to you, he watches closely from a high tree.
That's when it hits him; you can't hear anything.A question brews in his mind. Why? Why can't you hear? What evil would take away one of the most important senses from a child?
You fully turn around, running out of the forest and to your mother. As soon as she spots you, she runs to you, her bruised arms open wide as she engulfs you into a hug.
The predator scans the woman, seeing her as no threat to him or you. He figures you must know her, by the way you ran to each other, and the way she called for you.
"Sweetie," he repeats in a low murmur, watching you as your mother signs at you worriedly.
He's still unsure of what it all means, but he thinks the reason you gave him the flower was as a peace offering. Maybe you were more scared than you showed, and you figured if he killed that snake, he wouldn't have a problem killing you.
But, something tells him you truly weren't scared of him, and that the flower was more of a way of showing gratitude for killing the snake before it could hurt you.
He has been bitten before, but the pain is bearable for him. But, for you, being a small creature, would find the pain insufferable.
That could be why he killed it, he pitied you. He's still unsure of what caused him to act the way he did, but meeting you was something he would forever remember.
He feels the flower in his hair, caressing its silky petals before huffing and heading deeper into the forest as you and your mother head to the house.
