This is it. There's no backing out. You strode forward, dread intensifying in your gut with each hesitant step you took.
You contemplated this day more than you count. Valentines Day was supposed to be romantic- but why does romance feel so... terrible? So anxious? Like moths feasting on the insides of your guts instead of fluttering butterflies?
You love her, right? Of course you do. You already wrote the letter. There was no need to second guess- you just... want Peppa to notice you.
It wasn't an understatement you were an outcast in school. You never made friends. You never found the point in trying to. Your parents begged you to at least socialize with others - but nobody wanted you. Perhaps you were just a coward— a pathetic one, at such a young age.
Then you met her. She was shorter than you. Stockier. Would always wear those eye-catching vibrant red dress wherever she goes. Peppa, you heard that was her name. She was pretty popular, considering her bubbly personality. Well, you think to yourself, all of your classmates had a bubbly personality — so what made her different?
You still remember the afternoon when you finally met her. It was dismissal time, and your parents were taking too long to arrive to get you home. Perhaps you were finally abandoned and replaced with a better child, but despite the thoughts, you stayed under the awning in front of the school just in case they still remember you.
But you never expected that another student would also get stuck here with you.
"It's raining."
You heard someone say. A voice slightly high, perhaps bossy sort of tone, but there was a softness in it that you haven't heard for a long time.
"Yeah," You reply, despite your chattering teeth. Today was cold, and your light outfit only made it worse.
"Are you stuck here too?"
You frowned, "Isn't it obvious?"
When they didn't reply, you finally took the chance to look at them. And you blinked. She was Peppa, the girl you saw often in the front row seat of the class. Her red dress was visible under the yellow rain coat she wore. There was reddish tint on her cheeks— then you realized that oh, she was flustered.
"Rude," She huffed, "Didn't your mummy and daddy ever teach you manners?"
You shrugged, "They're too busy."
Peppa pursed her lips, "Oh."
The rain filled in the silence. You didn't know if it was an awkward one, you didn't bother much with learning social cues.
"What's your name?" Peppa then suddenly spoke.
You just looked at her. "You don't know?"
Peppa seemed to get even more annoyed. "That's why I asked in the first place! You really don't like answering questions."
You smile a little, "Maybe."
She frowned. You expected to her an outburst, but instead, she stuck out her hand.
"Since you don't wanna introduce yourself —I'm Peppa."
You stared at her pink palms, "Yeah, I know."
The pink tint on her cheeks seems to get brighter. Her hand falters slightly, but remained still. "Aren't you going to shake it?"
Wanting to give her a break, you finally shook her hand. "I'm Y/N," You replied, feeling a bit strange considering nobody really bothered to know you.
Peppa looked taken aback, as if surprised that you really shook her hand. But then her expression changed into a smile—a wide, genuine one.
"Y/N," said Peppa, "What a pretty name."
