I barely slept that night. My mind was moving back and forth between the past and the future. I would be happy every time I thought about our time together down in the underground. But then I would get sad when I think of her now.
She doesn't remember anything. She looked at me like I was a stranger. She wouldn't have known my name if it wasn't for my order at that coffee shop.
But when she said it, I still got the feeling of my soul floating away.
I was able to get out of bed despite my sleepless night. Sure, that bed was comfortable, but when it comes to the thought of Frisk, that matter is dropped down in a ditch.
I threw on my work outfit. Same pants, same shirt, and same shoes. They still smelt fine. But I threw on a little bit of Papyrus's cologne just in case Frisk comes by the store again. I don't want her to think I'm not clean. After all I do have a fresh start.
I walked down the stairs of out small town-home. The decor was close to same as it was in the Underground. Different color carpet. Grey blue instead of that weird one we had. The walls were white and filled with stains from Papyrus' cooking and people who used to live here. The living room was bigger than the kitchen. We didn't even have a dining room. The bathroom was barely used so it was cleanest room in the house ironically. The upstairs only contained our rooms. Paps was decorated the same. Except he doesn't have a race car bed anymore considering he drives a police force vehicle now. It made me sad to see it go but we all changed when we moved up here. My room was the same. I don't even have a bed. Just a mattress and a dresser for me. It's really all I need. My side table is a box.
Just like home.
I looked at the time on my phone. I slept so bad last night that I got out of bed early and I don't even need to leave. I sat on the couch and tried to close my eyes to hopefully get some real sleep.
As I felt myself falling, I heard the door swing open with voices following along.
"DON'T WORRY UNDYNE. ONCE YOU KEEP A PERFECT SLEEPING SCHEDULE, YOU'LL FEEL RESTED IN NO TIME."
"But I work out for an hour before I go to sleep. Need to keep these muscles in shape for the baddies we throw in jail."
"BUT SLEEP IS MORE IMPORTANT. DON'T THINK I DON'T NOTICE THOSE BAGS UNDER YOUR EYES. THEY'RE ALMOST AS BAD AS SANS'"
"Wow way to throw my under the bus bro." I said sitting up.
Papyrus jolted back. He went into his police stance and almost reached for his tazer before he realized that it was his own bones. "SANS! YOUR UP QUITE EARLY."
They were both dressed in their uniforms. They must have been on duty and decided to take a sit down somewhere where they thought they could get some peace and quiet before they got called in again.
I shrugged. "I actually woke to my alarm."
Papyrus just shrugged it off and sat on the opposite side of the couch. Undyne sat on the floor staring at the texture in the carpet. I know that look. She hasn't been sleeping well either. And I think I know why.
"So Undyne, heard you haven't been getting any sleep. Whatcha doing at night? Thinking of a certain scientist?"
Undyne laughed and punched the shin of my flesh-less legs. I felt my HP drop. "That scientist lives with me. And she's a quiet sleeper. So, she isn't the one."
Undyne went quiet for a moment. "Hey Pap? Do you remember that dream I had when we first started moving up here?"
Papyrus nodded. "OF COURSE. YOU REMEMBERED IT WITH SUCH GREAT DETAIL. BUT IT DIDN'T SOUND LIKE A PLEASANT DREAM. DIDN'T YOU SAY IT WAS AN APOCALYPSE SITUATION? AND YOU...WELL DIED?"
"Thats the only way I know it was a dream. I can't die!" Undyne laughed.
I started to feel myself tremor. She still remembers because of the determination given to her by Frisk. But because Undyne isn't used to the power, she thinks it was all a dream. This caused the timeline to shift. I understand why she did it...but God I wished she hadn't.
"SO, WHAT ABOUT DREAM? IS THAT THE THING KEEPING YOU UP?"
Undyne's smile faded. "Yeah. In fact, I have it every night. But it only focuses on the one part. Me dying. Getting torn apart by this human looking thing. And then lights out. I wake up and I can't fall back asleep without doing a workout. When I close my eyes, I'm back in that world and a different event happens. I'm this soul watching everyone fight for their lives. And I'm just sitting there helpless."
I felt sympathy for Undyne. She's reliving those days every night. And that soul part? She was a lifeless being. A ghost if you will. No one saw her. No one heard her. We all treated her like she was dead. And she was.
"And Sans! I should punch you for doing what you did in that dream."
Papyrus started to laugh. "HONESTLY SANS! IF I WAS HAVING THAT DREAM, I WOULD YELL AT YOU TOO!" They both started laughing at me. Forgetting this was a serious conversation.
But I knew exactly what they were talking about.
"Right. I protected the human right?"
Undyne stopped. "Did I tell you that part? Your kind a stopped listening when I told the whole gang. Made you look upset actually."
That's right. We had a little picnic at Asgore's and Toriel's. Undyne gathered us all up and started telling us her dream. I left midway because I couldn't handle the fact, she thinks it wasn't real. I was still depressed that we were here without Frisk.
"Yeah, I was listening just in a different room." I lied.
Undyne shrugged it off. "Yeah! I mean I think you were in love with that human or something. I was trying to kill her, and you just kept on protecting her. Honestly. If that was real, I would have been haunting you while I was a ghost!" She started to howl with laughter again. I felt the guilt and shame rise within me. It was my fault. But I knew Frisk was still Frisk. She didn't want to hurt anyone. Her hunger was just out of control. I needed to protect her. I'm sorry Undyne. But Frisk was more important to me.
"Speaking of that huma. Do you remember her name? Or anything about her?"
Both Papyrus and Undyne looked at me confused. She scratched the back of her head making her bun shift. "Not really. Kind of a blur. But I remember feeling bad. Like I didn't want to but I kind a had to sort of deal."
At least she felt bad for trying to kill her.
"Why ask?"
They both looked at me funny. I know it was a weird thing to ask. But I couldn't help but wonder if she remembered Frisk like I did. But I guess she only remembered feeling bad for her.
I felt my sadness deepen. Frisk was alive and well. I still lo-like her a lot. But she probably would never feel that way about me. She doesn't remember out experiences together.
Both Papyrus' and Undyne's radio started to buzz. They were talking codes that I didn't understand. But because of the looks on their faces, I'm guessing it was serious.
"Alright Paps, break times over."
Papyrus nodded and started heading for the door. "I'LL SEE YOU LATER BROTHER! AND MAKE IT TO WORK ON TIME!"
I waved and stood up as well. "I am. But first, I think I'm going to stop and get some coffee."
