"Alex, don't worry

"Alex, don't worry. You will get transferred to UPenn even if you don't make it there right away," Olivia says with a tired tone. She was much more gentle the first few times Alex expressed his fears, but this must be the hundredth time she's comforting him about it.

Alex called at around three AM, saying there was no way he was going to sleep. The results, the final results, are going to be announced in a few hours. I'm pretty calm, knowing my grades are good enough to major in Biology at UPenn. Olivia is for sure in. Kal is too, but he's worried about his parents' reaction. He still hasn't told them he switched schools. Alex, though, has no idea if he will be attending UPenn, or if he's going to major in Elementary Education. He's visibly stressed, scared even. I know the feeling.

We're in his living room now. The lights are off, and the only source of light is a torch facing the ceiling, casting a warm glow. The TV is on but barely audible. I'm sitting in one of the sofas, with my head resting on Kal's shoulder and my left arm sprawled on his torso. Alex and Olivia are mimicking our position (Alex is being me) to show us how couple-y we are being.

"I can't believe this summer is almost over," Kal says with a sigh. "We had plans to be productive and do things and all we did was laze around."

Olivia shrugs to push Alex off her and massages her shoulder. "At least you two worked."

I look at Kal and can't help but smile. "We did, didn't we?"

Kal bites back a smile. "Sum, she meant the job."

I swear I hear the Windows XP turning-off sound.

"We still have plenty of summer left," Alex says, repositioning himself so he fits in the couch. Next to Olivia, he looks like a giant. "We have a few days of August left, and then we have the whole September to ourselves. Doesn't school start in October?"

Kal smiles. "That's right. We have lots of summer left, if you think of it that way."

"Enough to watch a movie," Olivia says, making everyone else groan. She juts her lower lip out. "I'm still mad about it, Alex."

He wraps his arms around her. "We'll watch whatever movie you want, whenever you want. I promise."

Alex and Olivia start talking about upcoming movies and trash-talk DC comics. The latter is strange, since Olivia used to be a big fan of Batman, but when she quickly raises an eyebrow at me, I know what's going on.

I clear my throat. "Look, Alex, I don't think Miles Morales is the best Spider-man yet."

He turns to look at me so fast that I'm scared he might have broken his neck. "What?"

"I like Peter Parker more," I say, fighting back a smile. "Variant is a fancy word for a copycat."

Alex is just looking at me, eyes wide.
