AUSTIN'S POV
I was sat in the public gallery with Joe, Becky, Finn and Seth, waiting for everyone else to arrive. My nerves were shot. There had been breaking news the night before that Randy had confessed to all the charges that he was facing and was to be sentenced this morning. I had tried to call Katelyn, but she didn't answer, so I'm guessing that Drew was around. I hated that he had now forbade her to talk to me on the phone or via text.
'Has any of you heard from Katelyn since yesterday?' Joe asked, breaking me from my thoughts. I shook my head.
'I spoke to her very briefly last night, she sounded upset,' Becky answered. 'Sounded like she was either in the bath or was bathing AJ. Did she not speak to you?'
'No,' I replied. 'I think Drew is monitoring her cell calls, I called 3 times the other day and when I spoke to her yesterday, she said that she never got any missed calls.'
'She needs to get away from him, before she gets seriously hurt.'
'We have a plan in place, don't worry.' The court room door opened and in walked Katelyn, hand in hand with Drew, looking very pale, like she was going to vomit at any second. Katelyn briefly looked my way, as she walked by, and gave me a small smile, but her face quickly changed when Drew caught her. I wanted to kill that motherfucker.
After Randy had been sentenced to life in prison, we all filed out of the court room and headed to an Italian restaurant nearby that Hunter had hired out for a surprise party for Katelyn. I parked my Jeep in the parking lot at Walmart and walked down the block to the restaurant, cutting through an alley to get there. I didn't see who it was, but somebody attacked me from behind, hitting me at the back of the head, causing me to fall to the ground, face first. Turning onto my back, I looked up and saw Drew staring down at me with a murderous look in his eye. I scrambled to my feet and pushed Drew, hard, in the chest, making him stumble back.
'The fuck is your problem?' I shouted.
'Stay away from her,' Drew growled.
'Or what? You're going to hit me and put me in hospital again? I couldn't fight for weeks because of what you did.'
'No, you did that to yourself. You should've kept out of business that doesn't concern you, but, instead, you had to stick your nose in. We were happy until you came along and ruined everything.' I heard footsteps behind me, turned and saw Kyle, Bobby and Roderick walking towards us.
'You okay dude?' Bobby asked when they Drew level with us.
'Yeah, go on ahead and I'll be in shortly.' They left us, but not before Kyle gave me a quizzical look. That dude picked up on everything.
'So? Are you going to leave Katelyn alone?' I skirted around Drew and walked in the same direction as my boys did a moment beforehand.
'No, I won't leave Katelyn alone. She is my friend...'
'That you want to fuck?'
'It isn't all about sex y'know? It might be for you, but I know that you're not sleeping with Katelyn, so...' I trailed off and suddenly something hit me. 'You're cheating on Katelyn.' I chuckled. 'Oh my God, it all makes sense now.' I turned on my heel and walked towards the restaurant. I now had the perfect catalyst to get Katelyn away from him, but executing my plan would take time and a lot of help from people.
The lunch went without a hitch, Hunter offered Katelyn her job back and she said that she would think about it. She kept looking across the table at me, so I managed to slip away whilst she had gone to the rest room and caught up with her.
'Hey,' I said quietly, giving her a quick hug and a kiss on the cheek.
'Hey yourself. Thank you for coming,' she smiled, showing those cheek dimples that made me go weak at the knees.
'Like I would miss it. We need to talk soon, maybe grab lunch or dinner sometime.'
'I'd like that. I'll text you with a time and place.'
'Sounds good.'
'So, I bought a burner phone and thought you could save the number as maybe your mom or maybe an old school friend trying to reconnect. Someone that he wouldn't think to look at.'
'Okay, text me and tell me that it's Alex. She was my best friend in high school, we reconnected recently and he probably won't ask too many questions.'
'Well, I'll text you and we can sort something out. I'm gonna head out, have to drive back to Orlando for NXT, so I'll see you soon, okay?' I gave her another hug and went to kiss her on the cheek again, but she moved her head and our lips connected. I quickly pulled away and grinned.
'Just something to remember me by.'
It had been roughly 6 weeks or so since I had seen or heard anything from Katelyn. I was so busy with work and when I got home at night, I was so exhausted, all I wanted to do was shower and go to bed, but my plan was already in motion. It had taken Joe some convincing, but in the end, he gave in and agreed to help, as had Katelyn's ex-boyfriend Jack. I had emailed him, explained what was going on and he said that he was more than happy to help. Tonight, Raw was in Baltimore, Jack's hometown, and I knew that Joe was in town to give the fans an update on how his treatment for leukaemia was going, so I flew up to spend time with the guys on the main roster. I also wanted to be close, just incase Drew kicked of at Katelyn. I don't know how, by divine intervention or some shit, but I managed to get the suite next door to Katelyn and Drew, which was great because either meant that I could listen to the plan unroll and step in quickly, if needed. After taking a shower and getting changed, I sat down on the bed, just to chill out for a little while. I could hear raised voices coming from the next room and knew that things were going according to plan. I hated that I was deceiving Katelyn like this, but I needed her to get away from him.
The plan didn't work. All it did was make her sleep with Joe. ARGH! I'm so angry with myself for even thinking that it might have worked. Instead, it pushed her into the arms of another man. I'm such a fucking idiot!
I went down to the hotel restaurant for lunch, seeing as I hadn't eaten since last night, and saw Katelyn walking through the lobby with Joe. She said something to him and then walked in my direction. Fuck! How do I explain why I'm here?
'Hey, I didn't know you was coming?' she smiled, taking a seat opposite me and pinching a french fry.
'Um, yeah. I got asked to come, just in case I'm needed for a dark match tonight,' I said, thinking up an excuse on the fly. 'I thought you were banned from talking to me.'
'Yeah, but I'm breaking a lot of rules today.'
'Oh? What like?'
'Um, I may have slept with Joe. Well, it may have been a threesome with him and Drew.' I was truly stunned. I didn't know what to say. What could I say?
'Oh, okay.' I took a long sip of my Coke, frantically trying to think what to say next. Katelyn reached across the table and touched my hand. I quickly yanked my hand away.
'You're mad at me, aren't you?'
'What do you want me to say Katelyn? You just told me that you had a three-way with your husband, whom you hate, and a guy who raped you. I don't know what you expect me to say. Are you just stringing me along? Is this just a game to you?'
'Austin, where is all this coming from? Regardless of if I hate him or not, Drew is my husband. I just fulfilling my martial duties to pacify him. And to answer your questions, no, this isn't a game to me and I'm not stringing you along. I love you Austin, but you have to understand that I have to keep Drew sweet at the moment...'
'Even if that means fucking him?'
'Yes, no..I don't know. What does it matter anyway?'
'Why does it matter? Because I fucking love you and you have just tossed me aside like I'm nothing,' I exploded. 'Y'know what? I'm done.' I pushed my chair back from the table, stood up, walked out of the restaurant and headed for the elevator. I could hear the click of her heels on the marble floor behind me as I silently cursed the elevator for being so damn slow. As soon as the doors opened, I walked in and pressed the button for my floor. As the doors began to close, Katelyn wedged her body in the gap and got in. 'Katelyn, I have nothing more to say.'
'Will you please hear me out?'
'Fine, but you have 5 minutes.' The elevator pinged, signaling that it was at my floor, the doors opened and I got out, Katelyn right behind me. As I put the keycard into the slot to open the door to my suite, the door next door opened and out walked Drew. I quickly pushed Katelyn into my suite as he looked my way.
'What the fuck are you doing here Jenkins?' he thundered.
'I've been asked to come just in case I'm needed for a dark match or something,' I replied. 'Well, see you later.' I didn't give him time to reply, I just walked into my room and closed the door behind me, making sure it was locked.
'That was close,' Katelyn giggled.
'This isn't a game anymore,' I snapped.
'I know it's not,' she shouted back. 'Is this it? Is this our first fight? Are we arguing right now?'
'It can't be our first anything because you aren't mine.' I sat down on the couch in the lounge area and kicked my feet up on the coffee table in front of me. 'So, you wanted to talk, so talk. The floor is yours.' Katelyn sat down next to me.
'Austin, I don't get why you're so pissed about this.' I raised an eyebrow and shot her a quizzical look.
'So, if I went out tonight and hooked up with someone we work with, you wouldn't be mad? You wouldn't be pissed off? I put my heart on the line for you. I lost my girlfriend because of you..'
'Don't you blame that on me! How was I to know that you love me?'
'Oh, come on Katelyn! Are you that naive? Do you really not know when a guy is flirting with you?'
'Look, I'm sorry I'm not some whore who picks up on every signal that is sent her way.'
'Don't call yourself a whore. That's not what I meant.'
'You know it's only ever really been Drew for me, right? He was my first boyfriend, my first kiss, he took my virginity.'
'But you guys started dating when you were 18. What happened before then?'
'I was never interested in boys. Something happened to me when I was a child that put me off men.' Katelyn took a deep breath before continuing. 'I was molested by a family friend when I was a young girl. That's why I never had a boyfriend before I went to university. I dropped out of uni when Drew got signed with WWE and we moved to Florida. Then you know the rest.'
'I'm sorry. I didn't know.'
'It's okay. The only other people who know outside of my parents are Maxx and Drew. That's why sex has always been so sacred to me, why I always said that I would only ever sleep with someone if I love them.'
'That's a good thing though, no unwanted one night stands. I've had plenty of those and regret them.'
'Did you want a one night stand with me when we first met a few years ago?'
'Yeah, I did, but I'm glad that we didn't because I don't think we would be having this conversation right now if we had.' Katelyn's phone began to ring, she pulled it out of her pocket, looked at the caller ID, then put it back. 'Let me guess. Drew?'
'Yep. He can wait. Austin, I'm sorry.'
'For what?' I was confused as to why she was apologising.
'This, what we had planned. It can't happen.' I could feel my heart breaking into a million pieces.
'Why? Is this because he let you fuck Joe?'
'Partly, yeah.'
'You know he's doing that to keep you, right?'
'No, it's different. He has said that he is willing to change and that this is his way of making sure I'm happy.' She stood up off the couch and headed towards the door, I followed her, hoping that she would see sense.
'Katelyn, can you really be this naive? He is playing you. Drew is doing this because he knows that he has almost lost you and is trying to keep you by his side.'
'And what about you, Austin? What are your motives for doing this?' Katelyn rounded on me. 'Is this because I wouldn't sleep with you 2 years ago or however long ago it was?'
'No!' I shouted. 'How many times do I have to tell you that I don't care about that?'
'You just said that you wished we had slept together that night.'
'Yeah, but then I said I'm glad we didn't.' I sighed and ran my fingers my hair, tears threatening to fall. 'Y'know what, Katelyn? If it really means that much to you, then just go. I'm done fighting a losing battle. I would rather know that I will never be with you now, than having you string me along.' Katelyn shook her head in disgust and walked out of my suite slamming the door behind her. I sank down on the floor and cried. Again. Over a woman I probably was never going to have a chance with.
After Raw that night, Xavier and Ettore invited me out to a bar, with Kofi, Cesaro, Tyler Breeze and Fandango, as we weren't flying home until the next day, so I agreed. It wasn't very often that I got to hang out with Xavier and my UpUpDwnDwn boys. We were all sat in a booth, beers flowing, when Drew walked in, came straight over to our booth and dragged me out of my seat.
'What have I told you about staying away from her?' he yelled, causing other patrons to look our way. 'I'm telling you one last time, stay out of our relationship. My marriage is no concern of yours.'
'It is my concern when she tells me that you beat her again! I'm warning you this time. Lay one finger on her and I will destroy everything you love.' Drew laughed.
'Oh yeah? You and what army?' I felt a presence either side of me.
'We got your back Austin,' Ettore answered, folding his arms across his massive chest.
'Leave now,' Cesaro warned. Drew let go of my collar and dropped me on the ground, then walked out. Ettore held out his hand to help me up. I slid back into my seat and took a huge drink from my glass.
'You okay?'
'What was that about?'
'Has he been hitting Katelyn?' The questions came thick and fast from the guys that I couldn't think straight.
'Guys, please,' I said, holding my hand up. 'One at a time.' I sighed and exposed the marital secrets of Drew and Katelyn Galloway. 'I've been getting calls and texts for a few, maybe 6 months from Katelyn, saying that she needed to get out of the house and away from Drew. I didn't think anything of it at first. Christmas Eve, she called me and asked me to fetch her, but I couldn't, so I told her to call Bobby. Britt and I had a fight that night because she knows that I'm in love with Katelyn, told me that if I left then that was the end of me and her, but I didn't care. Katelyn needed me.' I took another drink. 'Anyway, I called Katelyn up and told her to meet me someplace and that was the first time I really saw the bruises. He's been hitting her. I don't know how long it has been happening, but it has. I was invited down to theirs Christmas morning, after Britt went and left. Drew and Katelyn were arguing when I got there, AJ was scared, so I put him in his bedroom and hovered in the hallway. I heard a slap and, thinking he had hit her again, I stormed into their bedroom only for Drew to walk out. Fast forward to after dinner, Katelyn and I were lounging around, watching Infinity War, when I noticed Katelyn was falling asleep, so I paused the movie and took her up to bed. As I lay her down, she told me that she wants out. We had a chat, Drew must've been listening and I confronted him about the abuse. He just laughed it off, like the egotistical prick that he is and I end up in the emergency room. Katelyn is waiting, biding her time until it is safe for her to leave him for good.'
'Fuck!' Tyler and Xavier said together.
'Man, if you need backup, we're here,' Ettore said. 'She's had it so rough this last year.'
'Thanks guys. I think I'm gonna call it a night and head back to the hotel. I'm not really feeling it now.'
'Why don't we finish up here and all head back?' Xavier suggested. 'I've got my XBox set up in my room. We can play a little Halo and order room service.' I gave him a weak smile, knowing that he was only trying to help.
'Nah, it's fine. I think I just need some alone time.' I drained my beer, stood up and, after putting on my leather jacket, walked out of the bar before anyone could stop me.
It didn't take me long to get back to the hotel, given that it was snowy and the sidewalks were iced over and very slippery. I shook the snow out of my hair as I walked through the main lobby towards the elevators.
'Mr Jenkins?' the petite, blond concierge called as I pushed for an elevator.
'Yes?' I replied, turning towards her. She brandished an envelope and handed it to me.
'Your wife asked me to give you this.' I was confused to say the least, but nodded and thanked her, then turned back around to enter the metal box that had just arrived. I pressed the button for my floor and waited for the doors to close. As I did so, I ripped open the envelope and read the contents of the note.
'Austin,
Sorry I lied and said I was your wife. I didn't know what else to do, or where to go. I've called Bobby and cleared it with Hunter. Meet me at the airport by 3am, we're going on a little vacation.
I think it's time.
Love Katelyn xoxo'
What?
He had hit her again, I knew it. When the doors reopened, I ran out of the elevator, down the corridor and went to knock on the door to Drew's suite, but the door was ajar slightly. I walked in cautiously, only to find Drew in bed with Sasha Banks. I backed away slowly, Drew looked over at me and smirked, whispering something in Sasha's ear, who then cackled. I left the suite and quickly went to mine, slamming the door behind me. I was beyond furious. How could he do this to the woman who he claimed to love? I rushed around the suite, throwing everything that belonged to me in my suitcase. I needed to get out of here. And quickly.
Twenty minutes later, I was sat in the back of a cab, on my way to BWI Airport. I pulled my cell phone out of my jacket pocket and text Katelyn.
Me: I'm heading to the airport now. Can't wait to see you xx
She immediately replied.
Kate: I'm already here. Cary dropped me off. She was going to have AJ, but I said that I needed him with me xo
Me: OK. Do you trust her to not tell Drew? Xx
Kate: I don't think she will. She's seen what he can be like. All she thinks is that I'm going to Glasgow, to see my folks. Want a coffee? Xo
Me: That's good thinking. I'm just in a cab, so should be with you in about 10 minutes. I love you xx
Kate: Got you a large latte. See you soon. You too xo
I smiled at the last message and sighed.
'That looks like a man in love,' the cab driver said, his Italian accent poking through, peering through the rear view mirror.
'I am. Things are very complicated, she's married to this asshole who hits her and calls her names, but she's too scared to leave him. We're going to the Hamptons to spend a week or two together, just me, her and her son.'
'That doesn't sound complicated. That just sounds like she needs to get rid of his ass and leave. Take it from me kid, if you love her, don't give up the fight.'
'Oh, I don't plan on doing, sir.' The cab driver pulled up outside the terminal. I got my wallet out of my pocket and paid the fare, tipping him an extra $20. He went to get my suitcase and backpack out of the trunk and stood on the sidewalk as I put my cell phone and wallet back in my pocket, then got out of the cab and joined him on the sidewalk. 'Thanks for the advice. I won't forget it.'
'If you're ever in Baltimore again, give me a call,' he handed me a business card with his cell number on it. I tucked it into my jeans pocket.
'I'm sure I'll be passing through at some point...'
'Gianno.' He held out his free hand and I shook it, then took my backpack from him.
'I'm Austin.'
'You had better go and get to your lady. Goodbye Austin.' I pulled the handle up on my suitcase and began to walk I to the terminal.
'Bye Gianno. Thanks again.'
