Monday
Dani clicked her pen against the clipboard she held. "And Bowie Burgers get four boxes of Perfect Rose."
Inside the farm's deliver truck, Manny wrote BB on the side of some stacked boxes.
"Do me a favor." She handed the clipboard over to Ben. "Don't dilly-dally today. Polite small talk is fine while dropping off orders, but don't be pulling up a stool to talk the hide off a cow. I don't want the truck left alone a second longer than it needs to be. Got it?"
"What's got your feathers ruffled up more than normal?" Ben said as he took the board.
Manny closed and locked the truck's back door. "She's all ready."
"Thanks, Manny." Dani waited until he moved on to his next chore of the day, then answered, "I'd rather not give vandals an opportunity to mess with our deliveries."
Ben gave a low grunt as he limped away. "There's a fix for that ya know."
"So I keep hearing."
"Well git on it then." He pulled himself into the cab and started it up. As he drove off, a fine dusting of soil was thrown into the air.
She scraped the ground with the toe of her boot. Dang. It's only been a week and the soil is already dried out. I don't need another hail storm, but a nice soaking would be a blessing before summer really kicks in.
"Miss Dani," Kylie said from behind. "I've finished watering. You want me to start sowing the Red Beauty seeds?"
Dani whirled around hooking her thumbs into the sides of her overalls. "Good question." As a sob writhed at the back of her throat, she sucked in her lips and held them tight.
I should say don't bother. Or... since I already bought the seeds, tell her go ahead. I could always sell the transplants at the farmer's markets for fall plantings. What I ought to do is stop stalling and call Evan. Someday ain't a day of the week and if I don't, Gram just might. At her age, she don't deserve to have the sheriff or DEA agents storming down the driveway with guns blazing.
"Naw, let's hold off. It's supposed to get hot by the end of the week, so we should do a good cleanup of the greenhouses and storage shed before it hits."
"Yes, ma'am."
"Do me a favor and let Manny know our change of plans."
"Yes, ma'am." Kylie jogged across the yard to catch up with Manny.
Dani pulled her phone out and stared at it. I should never have asked Gram for her seeds. No, that wasn't the problem. I should've kept the grow small and only for our use. Me and my grandiose idea to make extra money. I swear, if my brains were leather, I wouldn't be able to saddle a flea.
She clenched the phone and squeezed her watery eyes shut.
Now I've ruined everything. I let Papi down. I let Gram down. And what for? I ain't ever going to be nuttin' more than what I am. A loser.
