Dani stepped out of the pumphouse into a steady southern breeze. Fresh air cascaded over her damp skin in a most refreshing way.

Overhead on the utility pole, a mockingbird ran through his playlist of copycat songs. In hopes of catching the attention of a female, he'd jump in the air spreading his wings to flash the white of his feathers, then gracefully land. He kept repeating his dance of love all without missing a single note.

Yeppers. It's springtime all right. What the male species won't do to get laid. Hooking up for sex is the order for his day. And speaking of men—

Dani knew she should hate Evan and what he stood for, but seeing him so soon after his chaste kiss sent her hormones a buzzing.

More than once, she had to stop herself from reaching up and twisting a finger around the "J" shaped tuft of hair that swooped down over the left side of his forehead. Although, she did manage to covertly sniff his addictive as cocaine and equally dangerous scent.

She arched her back, stretching out the kinks brought on by sitting on hard concrete. Struck by an idea, she smacked her hands together. That's worth a try. He might be playing me, but if I can play him first, I can't get hurt. I'll run it by Ava. Let her tell me if I'm completely loco.

"Come Augie. I need me some water before calling the plumbing store." She patted her thigh and headed to the house. Augie trotted by her side tail wagging high.

"I can't believe you!" Ben laid in wait on the back porch.

Here we go.

Dani climbed the stairs. Obstructed from gaining access to the house, she leaned her butt against the railing, crossed her arms, and waited.

"Who cares what they want to do once they fork over the money. Let'um."

"I care and so should you."

"What are you two fighting about now?" Gram said from the kitchen.

"Ya better come out here," he answered. "We need a family meeting right quick."

Ben opened the door for their grandma in an obvious attempt to win her favor and once she was seated in one of the rocking chairs, he quickly parked in the other.

"A man was just here and offered us a tidy sum to sell. But she won't even consider it."

"Damn right I won't. And what was he offering?"

"Four hundred and fif-ty thou-sand." He spoke as if she was dense as a tree stump.

Dani scuffed. "Not even for a million. Do you have any idea how much and how long it would take to replace just the pecans?"

"Why you so worried about replacing them? Take the damn money and stop working yourself to the bone."

"Papi would turn over in his grave if he could hear you."
