Friday, Downtown Dallas, Texas

Evan watched the elevator numbers count upward to either his salvation, or, his doom. Chad's philosophy of all or nothing left no room for middle ground.

It wouldn't matter that the dictated timeframe was ludicrous from the start. All his impatient boss would focus on was that he hadn't fully executed the mission.

Of course not. Any normal businessman would have allotted a year or more. Not several weeks!

Ding.

The elevator came to a cushy stop at the forty-second floor. His time had run out.

Polished double doors spread open welcoming Evan to his execution if he didn't have the balls to do what had to be done. It was him or Dani, and he had no intention of taking the fall.

Nope, not after arriving home to discover his cherished Hellcat Challenger gone—repossessed. Not after starting the day with his landlord banging on his door demanding May's rent—in cash. Not after going to Galveston and maxing out his credit cards—for naught.

This is all Dani's fault. If she wasn't so damn stubborn, I wouldn't be on the brink of losing everything I worked so hard for.

Evan cupped his crotch, gave it a hitch, then stepped out of the elevator.

Outside the boardroom of Stone Place Investments, Chad paced. "Rossy." He reached over collaring Evan by the back of the neck directing him away from the door. "You have two seconds to tell me you've signed those last two jackasses. Especially Zimmer. Because, as sure as hell, I do not want to go in there and tell Daddy that wretched family has screwed us again."

"Hi, Chad." Evan dug into his pants pocket. "Here's your key fob. I gave her a good washing. She's all shiny and looking brand new. Man, those country roads sure hold more dust than asphalt or concrete."

His boss let go of his neck and took the fob. "Not for long. I'm going to change all that."

"I know the tourists will appreciate it. Say, what exactly started the bad blood between your families?"

Chad rubbed his sorry attempt at a beard. "Son, this is deeper than bad blood. This is about honor and decency. It's about me righting a vile wrong perpetrated by one Bobby Zimmer years ago." His face flushed and his steel-blue eyes turned black. "I aim to do what Daddy couldn't, eradicate those blasted Zimmer's from Hampa forever."

Damn. What could Dani's father have done that's worse than killing his own wife and brother?

"What did Zimmer do?"

Chad motioned with his head. "Nuttin' that ever needs to be parroted around here."

Taking his cue to shut the fuck up, Evan took a gander down the hall to see two men approaching. The one in a suit minus a tie was the formidable Mr. Bateman. The other man sported a cowboy hat, western blazer, and blue jeans.
