I stood in the Golden Hall of Meduseld in Edoras. My long brown hair fell onto my shoulder and a part of it was braided. I swallowed. My half-sister Eowyn just told our king Theoden that his son Theodred died last night because of his injuries. Eowyn kneeled next to Theoden’s throne and held his hand. She bursted out in tears when she told him the bad news. “My Lord, won’t you see him?” Eowyn cried. I stepped behind her and laid my hand on her shoulder. “It has no use. He is not himself anymore.” I hissed and glanced at Grima, who is sneaking around again. Eowyn looked at me and stood up again. I hugged her tightly, then Eomer started talking. “Orcs are now running through these lands and kill people. Orcs with the white hand of Saruman.” He let a helmet fall down on the ground. It had to be an orc helmet, because it was badly processed. Anyway, it indeed had the white sign of Saruman on it. I shivered and pulled Eowyn closer.
Grima came forth and shook his head. “Why do you trouble his already troubled mind?” he hissed while going next to Theoden’s throne. Eomer had enough of his twisted tongue. Nobody really liked Grima, the right hand of our uncle. My half-brother grabbed Grimas throat. “How long has it been since Saruman bought you? What was the promised price, Grima? When all the Men are dead you would take your share of the treasure?“ he hissed. I caught Grima glancing at Eowyn and me. “Too long have you watched my sisters. Too long have you haunted their steps.” Two guards seized our brother. We gasped. “Let him go!” I shouted. Grima laughed. “Oh Miriel. Do you really think I would ever listen to a person who is only half of human descent?” Then his gaze wandered from me to Eomer again. “You are banished forthwith from the Kingdom of Rohan... under pain of death“ I shook my head. That didn’t just happen. „You have no authority here! Your orders mean nothing!” Eomer tried to protest. “Oh, but this order does not come from me. It comes from the King. He signed it this morning.” Grima showed him a banishment order which was clearly signed by our uncle. I couldn’t believe it.
“If he should be banished, I will be banished as well.” I said. Everyone looked at me. Eomer shook his head. “No, Miriel. You can’t do this.” “I can and I will. I won’t let you alone. Eowyn, take care of our uncle.” After I finished my sentence, some guards seized me as well and threw me and Eomer out of the King’s Hall which always was our home.
He sighed. “You shouldn’t have done that, sister.” “But I did. Come, I know a place where some other banished Rohirrim live. We will find shelter there.” I tried to encourage him. After he thought about my suggest a few seconds, he nodded. “That’s a good idea. We’ll fetch our horses and ride to that place. We have to fight Saruman.” He said fierce. “That’s how I know my brother.” I grinned. And then we went down to the stables to get our horses. We saddled them quickly, took our weapons and rode away as fast as we could to the village I told about.
The sun shone warm on our heads. When we made a break at a river, we let our horses eat some grass and drink water. Meanwhile I made some eggs on a bonfire. “Why have you done this, Miriel?” Eomer asked me while watching me. “Because I won’t let you alone in the wilderness. You may know these lands very well, but who knows which creatures are lingering in the shadows of the night.” I replied without looking at him. “But now Eowyn is alone with Grima.” Eomer whispered. My gaze went from the eggs to my half-brother. “I know that. But Eowyn is strong. Never would she become the wife of this filth.” Eomer didn’t say anything and I gave him two fried eggs on a bread which I took before we left. He nodded and I sat down next to him. “How long do we have to ride to the banished men?” He asked finally. “I don’t think it will take much longer, probably a day.” Then we ate our meal and didn’t say a word. I turned off the bonfire I started and afterwards we decided to ride on.
