It's strange to think
For every happy story
There's a million sad ones

I remember reading a story
About a family
Searching for gold
In rivers

They found it
Once
Were happy beyond measure
Paid for their kids to go to school

But what of every family
That didn't find a nugget of gold
That day
And all the other days

How long have they gone hungry?

How many girls
Have heard stories
Of magical lands
Fairy tale princes
Only to face reality
Every morning?

Hate and cruelty
Are hidden behind the beauty
Of carefully selected words

Makes me think of all those voices
That went unheard

All those women
That were once girls
Wishing they could be
Fairies
Superheroes
Success stories

Only to find
That wishes are all
Those dreams would ever be
Suffocated
By society
