WHY IS THIS NOT WORKING?!
Chapters One
~Thea's POV~
My door bangs open at precisely 8:57 AM, and the sound of Kyle playing his guitar very loudly and singing even louder jerks me out of a peaceful sleep. I groan, throwing the pillow over my head in an effort to mute the noise of Kyle's blaring ditty, and Klaka's loud yapping, but quickly find that it is impossible.
And so my fourteenth birthday begins.
After Kyle finishes singing "Happy Birthday" with great gusto, and after he orders me to get downstairs because I wouldn't want to miss the chocolate chip pancakes that he and Max had spent a substantial amount of time on, would I?, I drag myself out of bed with a thump and stumble into the closet to change, leaving Klaka to follow Kyle downstairs.
The golden necklace around my neck glows against my skin, and I look down at it. The intricate, tiny pieces of metal twist around, glittering like an ever-moving glistening serpent around the circlet. I open my mouth and put my tongue to my two front teeth and form my lips in an 'O' shape, trying, trying to say the word. But nothing escapes my mouth but a small squeak, a failure of an attempt. I haven't been able to say 'Loki' since the day he told me he is my father.
Wrapping my fingers around the band gingerly, I tug at the necklace, hard. Then, I yank my hands back as, with a hiss, the gold burns my fingers. Little wisps of steam trickle up from the metal as I shake my hands, attempting to sway the pain. I have tried and failed to take the necklace off. But as long as my heart beats, it will not break. The necklace is a band around my neck, and it may be a comfort for Loki, but it is a manacle for me, a literal representation of my imprisonment.
Countless times, even more times than I have tried to remove the necklace, I have tried to tell. Everything has failed. When I try to write, the words freeze my wrist, literally encasing ice painfully around my hand so that I am forced to thaw it out with flames from my left fingers. When I try to act an event out, my legs quiver and collapse from under me. When I try to scream, all I can produce are silent gasps of air.
It's useless.
And it's not that Loki has even contacted me- how can he, without giving away his position? The only thing I have managed to successfully and vindictively do is to get rid of the Alder dye on my wrists my scrubbing at my skin until it was nearly rubbed raw.
I don't care if he gets angry. That's what I want.
Two can play at this game, Loki.
*
I have barely changed into shorts and a long sleeve t-shirt with the 5SOS tally mark on it (I fully expect Kyle to make fun of it.) when my phone on the plush blue carpet begins to ring rather loudly. Tripping over Klaka, who has apparently come back upstairs, I fumble with the phone and look at the screen. Of course. It's Jack.
As I slide my finger across the screen, I already know what's coming, but nonetheless, I yank the phone away from my ear when Jack practically screeches, "HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU! HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!"
