Mercy

Dark, looming storm clouds hovered over the great city of Seattle in the early morning hours of my first day at South Lake High. In minutes they would burst for the very first time since my arrival only days ago from the east coast. Getting used to the stereotypical rain that was evidently a regular thing would prove a challenge to get used to. Thunder began to roll as I slid out of my car, already late for my first period homeroom.

My feet carried me through the silent parking lot and into the main corridor of the school where only a few student were scattered. Some were rushing to get to class while others simply sat around chatting with their friends of scrolling through their phones. A puff of air escaped my lips before I adjusted my bag on my shoulder and took a turn towards the administration's office to my right.

The middle-aged woman sitting behind the counter smiled upon hearing my arrival in the room, waving me over with her free hand.

"Name?"

"Mercy Grey." I pursed my lips and sucked in a breath through my nose then released it.

"Okay, here is your schedule with your locker number and a map of the campus if you would like to use it. And your locker is on the second floor, number 364." She flashed yet another smile and slid the papers over to me. "Welcome to South Lake High School."

With a quiet thank you, I grabbed the papers from the counter and exited the office as I stared down at the schedule in my hands. The map was blurry and quite distorted making it look as if someone had poured water over it and tried to quickly dry it. I didn't bother to try and use the 'map' and shoved it on my back pocket then looked back to my schedule.

Mrs. Bennett; AP English 12: Literature and Composition. Room 137.

I clicked my tongue on the roof of my mouth while I allowed my eyes to flicker around the room numbers but ultimately deciding to head for the second floor. The sound of my Converse padding against the floor could be heard echoing off the walls as I jogged up the staircase to the second floor. The second story of the school was quiet and empty unlike the first story when I took my final step up and shuffled in the direction I assumed my locker would be along with the classroom.

It was almost ten minutes later that I had since found my locker and was looking around for my classroom. I turned the corner around the last set of lockers and passed the girls bathroom that I finally stumbled across the correct room number. Fifteen minutes were left during homeroom as I opened the door and awkwardly stepped inside the room.

The tall, slim woman at the front of the room turned to me and smiled brighter than needed. I gave an awkward smile back towards her and fiddled with the strap on my black one shoulder bag.

"Mercy Grey, I assume?" I nodded and bit my lip. "Welcome to South Lake High. You can take a seat next to Louis."

Doing as told, I walked to the back of the room and fell back into the chair next to a smiling brunette. His bright blue eyes were dancing happily as I took my seat and let my bag fall to the floor with a quiet thud. I took a momentary glance over at him, watching when he smiled over at me and waved subtly behind his book.

Class was over quicker than I thought, probably due to Louis' everlasting passing of notes back and forth between us. He stayed a little ways behind me while I got my book from Mrs. Bennett and walked out of the classroom before taking out my scedule again.

"What class do you have next?" Louis inquired.

"Uh, Music," I paused and looked down at the schedule a second time. "with Mr. Edwards."
