Today was the day. The day Maria would come home, the day Runa's everything would come back, the day the world would change, but also go back to how it was before.
While getting ready to go to the airport, Runa accidentally combed her hair with too much gusto, making the hairbrush fly out of her hand and shatter when the plastic hit the floor.
There was a spare comb in her drawer, and as she rummaged through it she heard a rattling sound. That should have been normal, but it was a tiny sound.
Runa lifted her hand from the drawer to see a silver chain dangling from her fingers, with an "A" charm hanging from it. Was it from Bailey or Maria? She was pretty sure it was from the latter. Runa chuckled and put it around their neck, butterflies in their stomach.

Buildings sped by and people on the street were mere blurs. The smell of the car Runa sat in was somewhat comforting. She could barely process what was going on outside; she could only stare at her shoes and say the same words over and over in her head.
She was terrified of forgetting what she wanted to say to Maria when she got to the airport. So many things could go wrong. Her leg bounced up and down and she ran a hand through her hair as the car turned a corner.
Bzzzzzt.
They had received a text from Kalinda. With shaking hands they opened the notification.
Their breathing slowed and they began to read the text. The necklace around her neck felt cold against her skin.
"I got your letter"Was all she got from Maria, but that was okay. It was better than nothing.
Runa gasped, dropping her phone. The seatbelt felt like it was cutting into her gut. Her dad yelped, the car swerved and—
