Chapter 2: I'm Sure It's Nothing

Summary:

Momo just doesn't want to see her two friends hurting, while Sana and Nayeon know that stubborn people do not like being told who they feel, so best let them get on with it. Even if it hurts.

Jeongyeon agrees with both sides.

Momo, for all her dancing prowess, was not actually a fan of going clubbing. She had fully come to terms with her social limits being the occasional fancy bar with co-workers or a board game night that lasted far too long for any conceivable enjoyment to be wrung from said games after the fourth one. Still, she indulged for the sake of her friends who did enjoy it (Sana, Nayeon, Chaeyoung and surprisingly, Tzuyu) and all in all when it was a group of them she felt better about the whole thing.

Upon arriving at Sana's, the closest apartment to the club, she had quickly realised that the night was not going to be one of their usuals. She was the last to arrive and while usually that didn't mean much it felt like she had missed something important.

As the kids in her dance classes would say, the vibes were off.

To start with, Dahyun and Tzuyu were nervously watching Jihyo and Mina line up shots delicately on either side of Sana's dining table, a sight that in all their years of friendship, Momo had never once even entertained as being a possibility. Yes, Jihyo could drink but she paced herself and Mina? Well Mina enjoyed being as sober as the event (and her friends) would allow so she could accurately gauge when the best time to dip from the event, usually accompanied by a Jihyo who was just looking for an excuse to avoid whatever nonsense the rest of them were trying to drag her into. Never were they the pair to actively kick off any sort of drinking games, least of all against each other. Things could get heated when they were competitive and by the looks of it, they were feeling competitive.

Momo sidled up to Nayeon, who was generously eyeballing the measures for her mojito like she'd already had a few. Or was prepping for a big night.

"What's up with those two?"

Nayeon, ever prepared to dissect a social scene, dived right into the point.

"They turned up giving each other the cold shoulder, very, very unusual. I think whatever's been simmering the last few weeks is close to boiling over."

The excitement in Nayeon's voice was tempered by Momo's unease at seeing the pair this out of sorts.

"Isn't it our duty as friends to try and y'know, stop them fighting?"

Nayeon levelled her with a look, her stop living in a fantasy look.

"Let's assess our options here, I've been getting Jihyo's side, you've been hearing Mina's and classically, Miss Minatozaki," She nodded towards the referee of the drinking game, "Has been playing both. So let's use what we know and ask ourselves: Would backing Mina into a corner help at all right now? "

Momo shook her head. She had to admit that Mina would never talk about her true feelings if they pushed her. Nayeon smiled.

"Now would anything less than explicitly spelling out Mina's feelings - which we've already agreed she doesn't want to talk about - to Jihyo get her to understand what was happening?"

Again, Momo shook her head. Jihyo was smart about a lot of things but very dumb and shy when complicated feelings were involved. Nayeon smiled again, more sympathetically this time.

"I know it probably looks like things might go wrong but come on, they've got us as friends! Worst case scenario we lock them in a room and tell them they're being idiots and they like each other," She side hugged Momo, watching as Jihyo took victory over Mina in whatever game Sana had devised for them while Dahyun and Tzuyu reluctantly cheered them on and avoided being drawn into the next round. It came down to Jeongyeon and Chaeyoung to take up the challenge and that's when Momo noticed the outfits the pair was wearing.
