Foggy Memory

"Toga? It's been years, ever since that fire" Penny whispered into the now frigidly still air. Penny looked at her, but Toga would not even glance her way. "Toga, you know I have changed. I would do anything for Cassandra, to be completely honest I think I may have fallen in love over the years that we have been friends," she explained, but it still did not warrant a response from Toga.

"You bullied my sister?! With everything she has been through, and what you probably have too, why would you do that?" the accusation was obvious in this question. But Penny just stood there dumbfounded, as her eyes misted over.

"I'm sorry. I know it was wrong. And cruel. I know I can never take it back, nor forget it myself. Cassandra forgetting it was heaven-sent for me. It gave me a second chance. Especially after what they did to her, I don't know how she ever survived that down there," tears ran down her face as she recalled Cassandra's description of that time.

-6years earlier-

Chaos was everywhere that night. Penny jolted awake to the sounds of screaming, and alarms everywhere ringing shrilly in the chilly air. She coughed violently as she lethargically crawled from her bed. Smoke was pouring into to bedroom from underneath her door. She could not take a breath without breathing in the smoke. "He-" she choked on the smoke inhaled through her mouth sending her into a attack of coughs. She tried to stand but could not lift her body without the room spinning in every direction, sending her hurdling back to the floor. She lay down next to the side of her bed, not moving. She tried to keep her eyes open, but she was losing conciseness. Her vision was slowing leaving her blind and incoherent to her surroundings.

Then suddenly, her door was blown off its hinges and sent flying by her. She tried to look up to see who was there to rescue her, but didn't have the energy to lift her head. Then her body went limp just as this person came running towards her...

-two days later-

Penny tossed in her bed, and moaned in her sleep. Until finally she came to and opened her eyes. Her eyes opened wide in shock and she jerked her hand up, only to realize bother her hands were confined to the sides of her hospital bed with handcuffs. "What, what is this. What happened?! Where am I?" she screamed as she pulled against her confinement. Nurses rushed in quickly injecting something into her arm that quickly made her start to lose awareness. Then she drifted in and out of sleep as doctors, teachers, officers came in and out of her room.

Several hours passed by in this drifting awareness, until finally it wore off enough for her to realize she was in a hospital and chained to her hospital bed

Several hours passed by in this drifting awareness, until finally it wore off enough for her to realize she was in a hospital and chained to her hospital bed. Then she remembered the fire, all the smoke, the thought that she was going to die, and then the memory of someone lifting her out of danger. But she could not remember who it was. She shivered as two doctors approached her bed.

"Yoshida Penny, is your full name correct?" a harsh doctor quickly rambled. Penny looked up at his hostile green eyes and nodded her head 'yes'. He wrote in his notebook before looking back at her. "Quirk molecular structure, age 16. Disowned by Yoshida Denji and Ayeka at age 8. Government property indefinitely," his monotone voice droned out not worrying of her feelings of this information. Penny's face fell as he mentioned her parents. "Who is the next patient?" she could still hear them as they crossed to the other side to another patient. Her roommate at this hospital.

"Name is Hayashi Sora. Age 14. Found wandering the streets amongst a town of ashes. Parents are unknown, no family known of. Admitted into government property indefinitely starting yesterday. Burns on both arms and left side of face. Both will heal properly this time. However, there is a wound on her stomach that suggests an abortion procedure that was current," there was silence as Penny heard the doctor scribbling on a notepad.

"Alright, to the next room." he barked at the other doctor. "But sir, don't you think we should take her into surgery to make sure everything was done properly in the procedure. It seems it was done at home, implying that this girl was more than likely rap-" the female doctor was then interrupted by his footsteps leaving the room, ignoring everything she was trying to say.

'Sorry, you seem like a nice doctor. It won't last long in this government hospital for us problem cases. Here nobody cares about us, and most of us they think would be better off dead. Thank you though,' Penny thought to herself as the sound of their footsteps grew further and further away. She wondered what this new girl's quirk was, because they never mentioned it. She was new here though, they might not know it yet.

-2 weeks later-

Penny was back in the dorms now that they were rebuilt. She had a roommate now named Matsumoto Kagami. They did not really talk, she was really shy and anti-social. Even during classes and cleaning, she stayed quiet and to herself. Penny did not even know why she was here, she never showed her quirk and seemed very nice and sincere otherwise.

Everything was back to how it was before the accident, except for Cassandra was in the dorm mother's basement for punishment for the fire. And Toga was missing. Several students died in the fire, but it never made it to news. The parents did not care, and some of the teachers seemed happy that they lost some 'students'. Days seemed to mix into the next until finally Cassandra showed back up to classes.

She looked like a skeleton of who she was before. More meek and quiet, and more like a living zombie walking around than an actual person. Penny watched her quietly move around like if she made too much noise she would be punished. But exactly how, Penny did not know. They were not friends, so it's not like she could go help her. 'She probably hates me, I am part of the reason she lost control that night' Penny thought to herself. That was when something sparked in Cassandra's eyes as she made her way over to Penny. 'Well, here goes. She is back to yell at me, which I deserve for what I have put her through' ran through her mind as she waited for Cassandra to speak.

"Penny, right? I'm sorry, I don't really know anyone here so I don't have any friends yet. I was just in an awful place when these teachers came in and recued me. They brought me to this school here, which ironically was right above where I was being held by my kidnapper," she rambled on a bit more as Penny just stared at her awestruck. Cassandra kept talking and finally came to her point, "So, will you be my friend please?" Penny stared at her at a loss for words.

'She seems to have forgotten everything before the accident. Is this some sick joke? Friends?! I used to bully this same girl, every day.' Penny was quiet for too long because Cassandra's face fell as she backed away sadly. "I'm sorry, I know I can be too much. I understand if you don't want to be friends," then she turned around to run away.

Penny grabbed her arm and pulled her into a hug with tears in her eyes. "Of course I will be your friend. I also know somebody else we need to talk to right now," she said trying to push back more tears. She knew this was wrong, she knew one day Cassandra's memories may come flooding back. But Penny had never had a true friend, loyal subjects maybe, but never friends.
