To prove a point that James is only flirting with Lily because he's a playboy heartbreaker, Severus tricks James into drinking veritaserum. Severus gets the truth out of him but the truth is far more that he bargain for.
James and Severus have been dating for quite a while. He loved being curled up with Severus and waking up to his face in the morning, He loved when Severus borrowed his body wash and Shampoo, He loved the fact Severus was making Wolfsbane potion. He just loved Severus.
He wanted to feel like this forever. To be his real self, to make someone else feel happy while making himself happy.
That's why he brought the best ring he could find.
Today was the day he ask Severus to marry him.
** Severus on the other hand was feeling more insecure than ever. Now that they were in 7th year he was James was going to be leaving the bubble that is Hogwarts.
Severus thought the worse. He thought that means James would find someone richer and prettier. He's not going to care about his old schoolyard sweetheart anymore.
Then when James finds someone new Severus wouldn't be able to stay with James anymore. Then he'll probably end up homeless or worse, having to go back to live with his father.
No more waking up to James saying something sweet or stupid in his ear, no more James stuffing his face when he forgets to eat, no more being tickled or kissed out of the blue. No deep conversation about the ministry with Remus, no more heart to hearts with Sirius, no more playing catch the rat with Peter, and worst of all no more James.
Severus sat on the bed and started hugging his knees hoping to calm himself down.
Sirius walked into the dorm whistling a tune. “What's your problem? Did James hide your books again, so you'd hang out with him?” Sirius still wasn't completely fond of Severus.
“No,” Severus sniffled, he was obviously crying.
“Shit did your dad do something? If you need someone to curse his ass I volunteer ” Sirius sat next to Snape and put his hand on his back. Despite their differences, this was the one subject Sirius took Seriously when it came to Severus.
Severus shook his head. “No, he didn't. I'm upset because I'm hideous,” these types of confessions were usually reserved for Lily, but Severus was feeling very overwhelmed
“No shit,”
Severus smacked Sirius’ arm off of him, “James is gonna leave me after Hogwarts I just know it,”
Sirius snorted, “Look Snivellus as much as I hated James is head over heels in love with you,” Sirius explained to the distressed boy.
For once Sirius gave Severus some good advice, but Severus didn't want to hear it. He needed to find a way to ensure James’ love.
** Severus wanted James to meet him in the potions room. James thought this was a good time to showcase the ring.
“Hey, love are you here?” when James saw the other boy he immediately ran to him and started kissing him. “You have no idea how much I missed you,” it wasn't until the boy turned around James realized this boy wasn't Severus.
“Shit I thought you were my boyfriend he told me to meet him here,” James rubbed his forehead. Severus was going to kill him. He's too smart to believe that.
“It’s fine. Who's this boyfriend?” The guy seemed to be more than understanding? James was grateful. Honestly, if James was in this guy's situation he'd be pissed.
James couldn't help but notice the guy was pretty good looking. He had pearly white teeth, soft bouncy hair, soft light brown eyes, a heart-shaped face, and a straight neither small nor big nose.
That didn't matter to James. He could look like the love child of that hot redhead chick on his Quidditch team and Sirius but he still could never compete with Severus in his heart.
“Oh, my boyfriend? His name is Severus. He's the quick-witted adorable Slytherin. You may have heard me call him Snivellus because I used to bully him up until late in Sixth year. Conventionally he's considered ugly, but he's... well he's not sweet but he is creative... and rude and cold at times also he used to smell bad if that hel-”
“Enough James!” the guy changed his calm tone to one seething with anger.
“Whatever are you leaving I need to meet with my boyfriend. I have something to show him,” James dismissed his attitude. He's been scolded worse by Severus.
“I am your boyfriend you half-wit!”
James was stunned. He looked barely anything like Severus, but that tone, he knew it well. Kinda like the time last week when he pranked Severus by hiding his books in the forbidden forest.
“But you don't look like my sevy. What kind of trick is this?”
“It's not a trick. How else would I know you like to nibble on the nape of my neck when we spoon,”
James never told anyone that. He had to be Severus
“Look I used some beautification potion... I didn't want you to leave me after Hogwarts because- well you said it yourself. I'm ugly,”
James felt low at that moment, “No Sev, I said conventionally ugly but I believe you are just wonderful. I love you Sev. I love you so much that I want to give this to you,” James got down on his knees opening a satin box with a beautiful ruby ring with a black band.

Severus' eyes watered as he saw the ring. “James this is... Don't you think this is too soon? I mean we haven't dated that long. What if one day you wake up and decide you don't want to be with me?” Severus was already head over heels over James being engaged and then getting dumped would double the heartbreak.
“Severus... Okay, we don't have to get engaged now, but you once told me infatuation last like two years at the most or something. When we get to our third anniversary can I propose then?” James asked.
Severus smiled, he loved how innocent and pure James love is.
“Yes,” Severus hugged James.
It wasn't a yes but it was an I'll think about it. James didn't mind waiting for him to think.
The two went back to the dorm. Severus of course had to cover his face to avoid an army of newfound admirers.
Once they entered Severus took off his cloak.
“Who the hell is this bastard?” Sirius knew everyone at school and he has never seen him at school.
“You're not cheating on Severus again are you?” Remus said.
“Wait again!” Severus shouted.
James immediately shook his head. “I swear I'd never!”
Remus laughed, “I'm joking I know that Severus. The promise ring is a dead giveaway. Severus would kill someone before he let it be taken off,” Remus explained. Apparently, he thought getting James in trouble with a boyfriend who could literally turn him into a pig was hilarious.
Severus scoffed at the two as he headed to bed,
“Hold on Sev. Hey Padfoot what do you think of Severus? Be absolutely honest and I won't be mad,” James already knew exactly what Sirius would say.
Sirius stood up and looked Severus up and down. “Hmm? He looks pretty hot. If I swung that way I wouldn't mind going on a few dates,”
Severus covered his mouth like he was going to throw up. “You proved your point,” he said climbing into his bed.
James joined Severus into bed as well. He took him into his inviting arms as he nibbled on his nape.
