Chapter 13

"I say we make them talk!"

They don't understand

"He's right. We know they can."

We do.

"Make them already! I'm ready for answers!"

Come out to us.

You put your hands over your ears, desperately trying to drown out both the Gladers and the Voices. Alec put his hand on your leg comfortingly and you forced a smile.

"Greenie?" Alby nodded to you, and you stood. "Is there anything you'd like to tell us?"

You looked at the faces of the Gladers, boys you had come to know and respect. They stared back at you, some hopeful, some scornful, some indifferent, one in particular.

You shook your head quickly before running out of the meeting hall.

You ran across the Glade until you came to the Deadheads. You climbed a random tree; it would take them hours to search them all. At least, that's what you thought. But no more than five minutes later, you heard a rustling in the branches underneath you.

"Hey, greenie," Gally said, pulling himself on the branch beside you.

You scooted over to give him room, looking at him curiously. He shrugged.

"It's the best climbing tree in the Glade. Where else would you go?"

You avoided his eyes, staring off at the walls.

"Minho told me about this morning... You must have heard something that deafened you temporarily, at least, that's what Clint said. I didn't hear anything."

You nodded, then shrugged. You never did understand why you were the only one to hear the Voices. That was something only the scientists at Wicked understood. You'd never thought to ask.

"Minho also said you can talk?"

You shrugged again.

"Then why won't you? The guys are getting pretty restless. You know, that note you came up with said you knew everything. Do you really?"

You hesitated a moment, then nodded again.

"And you won't tell us?"

You shook your head, then shrugged helplessly. Gally understood.

"You can't tell us?"

You didn't know how to make him understand. Maybe you didn't have to. You leaned closer to him, putting your head on his shoulder. He tensed, saying, "I heard Alec said he loved you... did you catch that?"

You nodded.

"Do you love him?"

You sat up, meeting Gally's eyes. They weren't as angry as they usually were, they seemed quiet and gentle then, in the tree.

You shook your head, no, you didn't love Alec. He was a wonderful friend, but you didn't see him that way. You knew his girlfriend outside the Maze, the one he had forgotten.

"Good," Gally huffed. Then, seeing your curious expression, he added, "I don't tolerate romance between my workers. Too distracting."

You nodded, your eyes turning back to the doors, a little disappointed.

"I can tell him if you want me to. Better yet, I can forbid any romance at all. Yeah, that sounds good." Gally smirked, and you giggled, putting a hand on Gally's arm.

He looked at it momentarily, then up at you, not understanding the gesture's meaning. You wish you could explain it to him, but now wasn't the time.

"Greenie! Greenie?" You heard Chuck's voice coming from the ground below.

"They're up here!" Gally yelled back, "I've got them!"

You shook your head, trying to stop him, but it was too late. You groaned, as Chuck ran to tell the others your whereabouts.

"Sorry."

You looked up sharply. That was the first time you had ever heard Gally apologize to anyone before. He seemed to realize it and grunted.

"Get down already. You can't run from the Keepers forever. It's dinner anyway. Hurry up!"

Gally seemed his usual angry self as he climbed back down the tree, but you couldn't help noticing how carefully he helped you to the ground.

"Greenie!" Minho shouted, running up.

You rolled your eyes, ready for a lecture, but Minho's tone and expression declared urgency.

"You need to come quick... the Box... it sent up something."
