Chapter 17

The shock and adrenaline numbed the pain, but only slightly. It still felt as if your arm was on fire. You blinked twice, trying to catch your breath. The Griever wasn't moving; the venom from its own tail had reached its heart just in time. The grip around your arm was relaxing slowly as the Griever died, and eventually, you pulled free. You lay with your back on the cold stone, gasping for air. There were stars above you, far beyond the maze walls. You could only see a few. But they gave you hope.

Once you caught your break, your forced yourself to stand. The Griever was dead in front of you, bigger than the ones from the simulator and much more intimidating in person. And yet, you had done it. You and brought it down.

You reached inside its remains and pulled the glowing, pulsating robotic key from its heart.

Well done.

You looked up, forgetting about your pain.

You have passed our challenges.

The key in your hand beeped once, twice, three times. A laser came out of one side, displaying a map of the maze. And yet... it didn't look like your maze. You'd seen maps, nearly everyone created. This map was different. It had a corridor you had never seen before.

Now finish the mission.

You took a deep breath. Ripping a long strand off the bottom of your shirt, you tied your broken arm to your chest... and took off running.
