"What makes you think I don't get anything? You think this is a one day thing?"
"I mean, don't you have the deed to the house in your name? So I guess you get that," Victor offered.
"Victor, what makes you so sure that what we begin with is what we end with?" John wondered, trying to keep his voice as passive as possible. He wasn't entirely sure how much Victor knew, or rather how much he thought he knew. Evidentially he thought the house owed him something, but did he yet understand what he had to do in return?
"Well it's destiny, isn't it? If our names are forever linked to that house, I'm sure we're sort of destined to be together," Victor offered with a little pout. Finally they both looked away from the games, their characters dying within thirty seconds of their serious discussion, though neither boy seemed to care. John's eyes slanted in dedication, while Victor dared to maintain the eye contact for his own foolish agenda. Was he so naïve that he could not see the truth of the dynamic relationships, or perhaps he was deliberately trying to convince himself of a fate different than what history had already foretold?
"My name is linked to that house, too," John pointed out. Victor's eyes dimmed for a moment, but sparkled again as he rationalized this small setback.
"Perhaps there's a forth, then," he decided quietly. "A girl for you."
"I don't..." John sighed, shaking his head and settling his gaze back on the television. He didn't feel the need to explain his sexuality here, especially when even he didn't know exactly what was going on inside of his heart. All he knew was that there was an exception to the rule, an exception that would be made artificially if it could not be done naturally. The house would have its way; the house would reach its little hand into his heart with the intentions of carving out a spot for Sherlock Holmes. Such was their destiny. That was what Victor didn't understand.
"You don't what?" Victor challenged, still preoccupied with this conversation to care about the lingering menace who had found his respawning point, thus killing him over and over again after figuring he was not attentive at the controller.
"I just...I don't think it'll be that simple. When has anything about this house been that simple?"
"Are you doubting my relationship with Sherlock?" Victor growled, finally slamming his controller into his knees and accidentally throwing a bomb into the playing field.
"No! No, god no. I think you guys are great together, honestly I do! But don't you think that's too easy a destiny? And if that's really the case, why am I involved at all?"
"It's called true love, John. Maybe you're just jealous because you've never felt..."
"Victor, he's your first boyfriend! What experience do you have to prove this is true love?" John debated, shaking his head as if to try to spur some more common sense into his train of thought. Was he missing something valuable? No, undoubtedly not. It was Victor who had become a little derailed.
"How long ago were you trying to set us up? Now that we're together, you're thinking sabotage?"
"I'm not sabotaging anything! I'm just trying to warn you that the first relationship, no matter how exciting, probably isn't as definitive as you imagine!" John pointed out.
"Our names are literally written in history together!"
"So is mine!" John exclaimed. Victor opened his mouth to argue, and certainly he was prepared, though he caught himself in an instant. His brain, however jumbled, seemed to at least process John's insinuated argument.
"That...that shouldn't have anything to do with us. You're not even gay," Victor pointed out. John bit his tongue again, but decided to forget Victor's closemindedness. Perhaps it was his first time ever including himself in another category, distinguishing himself from John's 'not gay' section of people. This was a moment of achievement for Victor, but a moment of frustration for John. How was he supposed to defend himself now, when continuing on with his argument would hurt his friend so much? No, surely this could be a secret for now. Besides, it may never come to pass. Maybe this time around, they were the exceptions.
"You're right," John sighed heavily, finally turning away towards the TV to start running around the map some more. "I guess maybe I do just get a house."
"And we'll come visit all the time," Victor chuckled, his smile returning with his optimism as he continued to play. John sneered. He tried to focus back upon the game, though with one more unseen kill the game ended, displaying the results of the match on either side of the split screen. John was bathed in the green light of victory, while Victor was forced to frown upon defeat. This was, if anything, a small victory in his eyes.
