Leah looked up at the clock.. it ticked loudly as the teacher went on. The girl started to pack up her binder as the hand got closer and closer to 12:30..

"Finally.. lunch." Her mind groaned, the bell rung as she stood up, her chair skidding back a bit as she slid her beige backpack over her shoulders.

Readjusting her sweater, she pushed her chair back in and started towards the door. Silently waiting next to the wooden entrance until everyone else had left... as she finally walked through the door, she sighed. Knowing it was lunch meant that there was no one for her to sit with.. but is that really a bad thing? I mean, she liked being on her own, but she didn't know if the quiet was nice, or if she was lonely.

She reached her locker and gulped, putting her backpack into the blue, metal cave. Surrounded by others in the crowded hallway...

she slipped in and out of people as her head hung, staring at the ground, gripping her laptop case as she speed-walked into the large room where everyone was eating, her eyes darted to the lunch line as she decided that it was to crowded.

The sounds of people talking as they ate filled the large room, the girl found an empty table, sitting down as she took out her laptop. Setting it down lightly on the white, folding plastic table, her pale fingers sliding under and lifting up the top, revealing the bright screen.

Leah got out her headphones, untangling the wires as the girl entered her password, followed by her slipping the headphones into her ears.. the loud noises of the cafeteria that had once filled her ears were now just background noise to music her computer played.

Leah pulled up an essay she was working on.. her eyes felt tired, drooping as she tried to keep herself awake. The girl hadn't gotten much sleep the night before, but that was normal. With all of the noise from outside her mother's apartment..

But she worked on her essay anyway, researching and typing, back and fourth as the lunch hour was almost over.. she felt herself fading. So tired she felt as if she could fall asleep right then and there.

"God.. what teacher assigns an essay on the history of currency in Canada..?!" she mumbled to herself, her eyelids feeling heavier as she started to close them..

                                                                                                                                            ...

                                                                                                                                                        ....
                                                                                                                                                                    .....

"Hey... lunch is over.." a boy whispered as he tapped Leah's shoulder.. her eyes fluttered open as she found her head on her keyboard, having been asleep. She sat up quickly, slightly confused as she looked around, seeing no one in the cafeteria.

"Am I late for class?!" she burst out, the boy blinked, clearing his throat. He didn't think the girl would be so surprised. In a process of trying to calm her down, he said "A bit.. but it's fine. Only around five or ten minutes late I think,,?" His voice soft as he didn't want to alarm her farther.

Leah looked around at the empty lunch room, seeing if there was anyone else.. her heart beat started to slow as the boy's calm voice reassured her.  "Oh.. alright." She swallowed, looking up at the boy's light green eyes, looking down, a bit embarrassed, the girl stood up, slipping her laptop inside the case, then inserting her case into her backpack as she hoisted it onto her shoulders.

"Sorry about freaking out and stuff..." Leah muttered, her voice nervous as she looked away from the grey, tile floor and looking at the wall across the room. Trying to distract her dark brown eyes from looking into the boy's face. "Oh! Yeah,, heh.. it's alright."

The boys voice intriguing her, as she realized she had only seen him before in the hallways. For the past 4 years she'd spent at the middle-high school building, she had never actually talked to him..

She then started wondering if she wanted to hangout with him, she didn't exactly want to not talk to him again.. she cleared her throat, pausing for a second before building up confidence. "Uh... would you maybe want to eat lunch at this table tomorrow..?" Her voice nervous as the girl waited for his response...

"Of course! That sounds great, I've noticed you sitting here alone for a while..." The boy smiled, his voice comforting Leah as he started to walk towards the door leaving the cafeteria. "Oh! Okay,,! Well, bye.. uhm.." She said, her voice a bit confused as she noticed that she didn't know his name...

"Alex." He interrupted as he quickly turned around to face her, walking backwards. She already knew her name. She had seen others calling her weird nicknames from across the lunchroom..

Both of them left the room with smiles, as now they had something to do other than sit all alone..
