The house, or should I say mansion, looked amazing. Allie and Tay had done a great job. Allie was right when she said that the view was epic because it overlooked the beautiful ocean.
I went up to one of the many bedrooms and got ready. I looked at myself in the mirror. The dark green dress I wore suited my green eyes and slightly tanned complexion. My long but always messy dark brown hair was nicely straightened. I didn't exactly look pretty (I never did), I looked okay. When I went downstairs, Allie, Tay and Kevin were already there, all ready for the party (Obviously I was the last because I'm always slow). They all looked gorgeous but I couldn't help but wonder why Kevin was still there. This was supposed to be a party, a last hurrah, for us ex-seniors of Millerton High. It felt rude to ask so I didn't. Slowly everyone started to come and the house was jam-packed in no time. It was nice to see all my old friends one last time.
I have 2 words to describe that party - Crazy and Wild. We were all having so much fun together. For once in a really long time, everything didn't seem so serious. I was having a great time, then I saw Josh.
He looked so happy and somewhere deep within, it hurt. Just looking at him brought back so many memories. It's hard to let go of someone you've cared about and loved for so long no matter how pissed off you are with them. I'll never truly let go of the idea of us but that's something I think I can live with.
"What's on your mind?"
I looked up and I saw that Kevin was standing right in front of me with a can of beer in his hand.
"Want one?"
"No thanks", I said rather coldly.
"Oh gee! What took the little color left out of your not so 'happy go lucky' life?"
"Just leave me alone!"
He looked at me with a sort of amused expression and that irritated me a lot.
"Is my misery/pain a form of entertainment to you? What do you look so pleased about?"
"It's just that for a girl who destroyed a punching bag over the guy, you still look rather... how do I put it in a nice way... interested in him."
"Just shut up before I slap you!"
"Understood ma'am! Wanna take a walk?"
"Anything to get out of this place!"
I remembered that Allie had mentioned that there was a short path leading to the cliff from the backyard. I was sure that there wouldn't be anyone near the cliff so we took that path. It was a two minute walk and I was sad that it was over. The cool breeze, the lovely plants and trees and the peace and quiet was a huge contrast to the scene in Allie's house. We sat down on a huge rock and just looked at the ocean for sometime, so great and full of incomparable beauty.
"What do you think of the ocean Elise?"
Huh? How random!
"What do I think? Well it's hard to say. It's glorious, so splendid and magnificent, peaceful and amazing to look at. But it's also so immense and that scares me a little."
"Scares you? How?"
"Well imagine that the ocean is life and you need to swim across it to reach the other side. Being so vast, what if you get lost on the way? Or what if you can't continue swimming? You just drown and die? You'll eventually get to the other side but what's the point if you're a total wreck when you do?"
"Another way to look at it would be that since it's so vast, there are a gazillion different places you can reach because there are so many ways you can move forward. Even if you get lost, you will reach some shore or island if you keep swimming. The challenges you face will just make you stronger."
"Hmmm... yeah that is another way to look at it but we're all entitled to our opinions."
"And the ocean is not always peaceful! Have you ever seen it during a storm? And the waves that charge towards the shore? How is that peaceful?"
"The ocean is most of the times peaceful. Only when something disrupts this peace, like a storm or the shore, it turns into a wild, raging beast."
"Is that how you are? Perfectly calm and steady but if something goes wrong, you become the Hulk? Because if it is then please remind to never ever ever get on your bad side. NEVER."
"Hahaha very funny", I said in a very sarcastic tone.
"But, it is true to some extent. I don't become the Hulk! I just get pissed and block people out."
"Like you did when the whole Josh episode took place. You are still angry and you've sort of blocked out your friends. You didn't block me out though. I wonder why that is?"
That was question I didn't have an answer to. I really wish I did though. Also, he looked a little smug and that was annoying!
"I don't know!"
"You don't know or you don't want to know?"
"Ugh! You're tap dancing on my last nerve! DON'T PUSH IT!"
"Am I getting inside your head and messing with it Elise Hunter?", he said with what seemed like a cunning grin.
I didn't say anything for some time. It was just the sound of the waves hitting the shore below and the hum of the wind blowing. I took a deep breath.
"Yes, you are."
