"Very funny now get up! You don't want to be late on the first day of college!"

"Shit! First day of college!!"

"Yes, first day of college sleepyhead! Now run to the bathroom and don't forget to put 25 cents in the swear jar!"

"Stupid swear jar! Don't have time to argue. Will pick up the matter once I get back!"

"Of course you will. Don't forget your acceptance letter, it's on your study table beside your bag. It has a map of the campus so try not to get lost. Bye sweetpea! I'm heading out."

"Millerton College of Performing Arts is considered to be one of the best colleges in music education in the country and there's a reason for that. It's because of such amazing mentors like me! Just kidding! Hi everyone! I'm Patrick Shore and this is Grace Ryan. We are going to be your mentors for the next 4 years. You may have realized that here in MCPA, it's a little different. All of you are divided into groups based on the course you have opted. There are 30 students in this room and each and every one of you answer to me, and of course, Grace. We are going to guide you and shape you and we hope that in the course of these 4 years, all of you emerge as brilliant musicians signed by various record labels. Before we begin the intro I'd like you all to get up and introduce yourselves."

I was sitting in the last row because I was a little late and there were only 2 seats available at the very back. Beside me was a girl with red hair who was a little taller than me (I'm not that tall so almost anybody is taller than me). I didn't pay attention. I could hear some names like Rebecca Cristford, Victor Lashley, Brandon Elcott, Hannah something etc. etc. etc.. I didn't really care. I was still in my "HadToWakeUpTooSoon" mood because I got home from the party around 1am. After like 10 minutes the girl beside me stood up and said,

"Hi! I'm Katie Jones."

She looked friendly. It was finally my turn. I looked around and saw everyone for the first time and they looked like nice people.

"Hey everyone! I'm Elise Hunter."

As I was sitting down, I could've sworn that I saw Mr.Shore's eyes widen for a second. Weird! Or maybe I was just imagining stuff. I hadn't gotten enough sleep so it was totally possible. My thoughts were interrupted by Mr.Shore.

"All of you will be divided into groups of 2 each, 1 boy and 1 girl. You will be working as a duo till the end of your 2nd year. This is to make sure that you know how to work in harmony with other singers. Let's form groups."

All of us got up and formed 2 lines (girls on one side and guys on the other). I was the last one. They made the groups based simply on where you were standing in the line! Shouldn't they like check who's compatible with whom and then make groups? By the time they got to me there was no one left. I thought Mr.Shore said that there were 30 of us yet I didn't have a partner. I must admit, I was sort of happy. I'd rather work alone than with some egocentric wannabe who wants the spotlight all for himself!

"Hmmm that's odd.. Weren't there supposed to be 15 girls and 15 guys Grace?"

"Yeah Patrick. I guess someone's running late. I'll check the list to see who it is. Meanwhile, why don't you all get to know your partners."

I just stood there and watched everyone talk to their partners. It was a little awkward. I was staring at the ground when I saw someone walk up to me. I looked up and saw that it was Mr.Shore.

"What's your name again?"

"Elise Hunter."

"Right, sorry I forgot. It's a nice name."

"Thank you Mr.Shore!"

"Please, call me Patrick. So.. Do you live here in Millerton?"

"Yes, I do."

"First day of college. Are you nervous?"

"Just a little. I'm extremely excited! Umm excuse me but have we met before, sir?"

"It's Patrick and no, I don't think so. Why do you ask?"

I wanted to say that it was because I saw his eyes widen when he saw me but I might've been mistaken so I lied instead.

"No reason. You just looked familiar."

"Hey Patrick, I think I figured out who's missing."

Ms.Ryan had a sheet of paper in her hand with a list of names. Mr.Shore took it and glanced through the names for 2 minutes.

"Elise, looks like your partner is... Kevin Scott."

What?! No way! Hell no! NO NO NO! Kevin Scott? This is a joke right? Out of all the people in this world, Kevin Scott! What are the odds? Ugh! This is bad! It can be some other Kevin Scott right? It's not an uncommon name. I really really really hope it's not him! I hate The Fates! (Some of my ancestors were Greek). Those old ladies love to make my life miserable!

"Is everything fine Elise?"

"I don't know."
