The light of the shadow

chapter four

When I arrive home he sits at the table, a half-empty bottle in front of him.
"You didn't make dinner.", he says. I am glad that he isn't too drunk yet. I get in the kitchen and start to cook a fast dinner.
"How long are you going to stay?"
"As long as I want."
I nod disappointed. I hate it when he is here.

The next day at school Peter and Liz sit together at the table with Liz's friends. They don't even look at us. When we have science together Peter would not pay attention and just look at his phone.
"Can you help me?"
He signs. "What do you need?", I know that he is trying to hide his annoyance.
"I need you... as my lab partner."
"Oh." He finally puts his phone away. While doing the lab I hear peters phone vibrate multiple times. I see how he looks at the pocket he put it in. When he looks back at me and realised that I saw him he just smiles.
"So the first date was good?"
He smiles softly and nods. I want to tell him about my dad, but he wouldn't care.
We finish and he goes back to his phone.
"Parker take notes.", I didn't notice how the teacher stepped behind me.
"Yes, Miss."
When she leaves he grins at me and takes out his notebook.

"I can't today."
I look up to him. The wind plays with my hair. I forgot to tie it.
"Why?"
"I am doing something with Liz."
"Okay."
When he leaves the roof I think of just going home. I have done this without Peter before, but catching robbers isn't as fun alone.
I hear a siren. Just this one, I tell myself.
