Basil woke up from a light slumber in Kel's bedroom, stretched across his sleeping bag. His sleepover with Kel and Sunny had served to be a subtle reminder of the old days, where they would stuff themselves with popcorn, read Captain Spaceboy comics, and talk until the sun came up. Except something seemed off without Aubrey and Hero... and Mari too. Aubrey had been too busy with her new part-time job to join them, and Hero had gotten into his dream college, boarding there because it was too far away from home. No, it wasn't that. Something was off about Kel. In the past few weeks, he hadn't been his usual self. He was a bit more hyper, impulsive, and rude, not to mention he always smelt fizzy and like citrus, which admittedly was an improvement for the sport-loving boy.
Basil's mind winding out of his contemplative path of thought, he propped himself up on his sleeping bag next to Sunny's, watching the boy sleep peacefully. On the other hand, the raven-haired boy was always glowing contentedly after he had confessed about his terrible past. Not any more talkative or eager, just sort of in the background smiling. Basil suddenly noticed his sandpaper-dry throat, so he quietly crept across Kel's lightless bedroom to the kitchen, but the floor began to spin beneath him in a wave of tiredness and he tripped, protecting his fragile bones from the floorboards by holding on to the closet door. It creaked as it opened, and Basil saw a sight not unlike an alcoholic's secret stash. His closet was filled with bottles sharing the same shape as generic soda. Basil stared, confused, and picked up a bottle. The label read "Orange Joe". He turned around, uncorking and sniffing the bottle, and staring at Kel sleeping in his bed. Kel's eyes snapped open, and Basil stifled a scream, petrified, unable to move. Kel crawled across the floor like a spider, his neck cracking at all different angles. Basil kicked Sunny, first whispering, then screaming at him to wake up. Kel reached the unfortunate boys, and Basil took his final breath as the overwhelming tangerine-and-coffee drink's stench filled his nostrils.
Basil woke up in a sweat on a sunny morning, still in his sleeping bag, sprawled like a starfish stuck on an aquarium window. His eyes snapping to Kel's figure in bed, he realised he was still snoring heavily. Sunny was also sleeping, but his face looked uncomfortable, and his nose was wrinkled as if there was a bad smell in the air. Basil barely noted the tears on Sunny's cheeks as his eyes wandered to Kel's closet.
It still smelt like coffee in the room.
