The next morning I woke up in Devon's arms, he was still sound asleep, his chest rising and falling slowly as he snored softly.
I slipped out from his arm as smoothly as I could and tip toed into the bathroom.

So, this is how it is now.

I made a mental note of everything I've discovered over the past week or two.
   1. Alexis' and her ex husband work for Jensen, who is working with Victoria to merge the Dragons and Serpents into one big deadly cult of bloodthirsty psychopaths. Sounds about right.
But if Alexis and her ex were involved with Jensen, does that mean Ollie is too? What does that mean for Stanley? Surely Alexis wouldn't put him in danger... although thinking about it, she might be doing it without even realising, she's just that aloof.
Perhaps she isn't as aloof as she seems though. This discovery has thrown all of that up in the air.
   2. Jodi is out for the count, she doesn't want anything to do with us or the gang. She wants space. She wants to be left alone. She's scared and she's angry - and she hasn't called the number I gave her. Yet.
   3. Harrison and Kat are having a baby. Enough said.
There's a note burning a hole in the pocket of my jeans, that I'm too scared to open. It's from Kat, who knows what kind of spell she's put on it. I should tell Devon... but I can't tell Devon. I know what he'll do, he'll just tear it open. Kat trusted me with it, and although she's not one to be trusted herself - I want to honour it.
   4. Devon is working with Isaac. Devon is working... with fucking... Isaac Kingsley.
   5. We're being watched.

I jumped as the bathroom door flew open, Devon stood there looking like he was on the verge of being frantic.
"What's wrong?" I said, my voice a few octaves higher than usual, my heart still hammering in my chest after Devon nearly took the door down.

He tugged at the hem of his shirt, something I've never seen him do before, "I just got a call... I got a call from a hospital nearby." He ground out, "Meghan...Meghan is in a coma." Silence filled the space between us.

   Meghan in a coma.

"They called you?" Was all I could say.

He nodded, "For most of the guys, their parents aren't involved, or can't be involved so... I'm their emergency contact. I never wanted to find them through it being used." He turned and walked back out into the bedroom, "Shower quickly, do what you need to do because we have to get to the hospital ASAP." He breathed, and slammed the door behind him.

I recognised the way he was holding himself. It's the same way he acted after I'd been found unconscious in my room.
Someone had hurt someone he cared about, and they were going to pay.
   Dearly.

I showered as quickly as I could, thinking about Meghan the whole time.
We'd never seen eye to eye, but when I was taken to the Dragons base and when I escaped... and every time I was in danger really. She played a part in protecting me - I owed her.
I swapped with Devon, he showered whilst I braided my hair and slipped back into my clothes.

He didn't waste a second, as soon as he was out the shower he threw on his clothes and left for the car.
I cringed at the idea of his clothes clinging to his wet body.
He's going to be itchy as hell.

The car ride was silent, Devon didn't say a word, he just turned on the radio to fill the static and focused on the road.
I watched as he picked at his thumbs, resting his hands on the top of the wheel to do so, and chewed on his lip.
   He was anxious.
   Devon was actually anxious.
I knew it was in him somewhere, after all he's a human being, but seeing him physically expressing it made me uneasy.
Maybe this was bigger than us after all, maybe there's only so much we can realistically do to stop Jensen and Victoria.

We pulled up at the hospital, I frowned at the sign but couldn't make out the name, it was rusted and scratched off.
In fact the whole place looked dodgy. We parked near the entrance and Devon was out of the car before the engine had even slowed to a stop.
I struggled to keep up with him, double checking the car was locked before following him inside - it was bad enough our friend was comatose in some dodgy side-road attraction hospital, the last thing we needed was to leave and find our car missing.

The receptionist directed us down the hallways to the ICU, where too many people were hooked up to all sorts of ventilators and machines.
The noises were haunting, rattling breaths and beeping. I shook my head to clear my thoughts and followed Devon to the last door in the hallway.

   There she was.

Pale, her hair - still with its multicoloured strands - lay limply across her pillow. Meghan's lips were painfully dry, and her face was tallow. She looked... and I hated to admit it... but she looked only moments away from death.
   What the fuck had happened?

Devon didn't move an inch. He just stared at her.
I reached down and grabbed Meghan's hand, squeezing softly just in case... but nothing in return.
"You're strong." I whispered, leaning down to get closer to her, "You are a fucking strong woman, the Meghan I knew and hated-" I chuckled softly, "-would fight back. You are fighting back, I can feel it, but you need to fight harder Meghan. We need you. Devon needs you." I kissed her cold cheek and backed away, wrapping my arms around Devon and awkwardly hugging his stuff frame.

"When I find out who did this..." he began, but I shushed him, rocking him slowly from side to side.
The sound of footsteps came from around the corner and a man dressed in scrubs seemed to startle for a moment before introducing himself.

His name was Doctor Vikhram. He was young, tall, with beautifully tanned skin.
He explained that she had been found in the middle of the night, on the side of the road by a team of paramedics heading back from a call out. She was badly beaten, with multiple head traumas, fractures and internal injuries.
She'd been attacked, was the verdict from police.
But apparently as soon as the case was opened it was immediately dropped. Like the police weren't interested with getting involved.
Doctor Vikhram made a point of mentioning that authorities were uncomfortable with "harbouring an ex gang member" and were steering clear of any involvement besides her hospital care.

"What so they just... they just don't want to know?" Devon spat.

The young doctor smiled uncomfortably and nodded, "Pretty much. At the moment we're doing everything we can do, she's hooked up to all the machines we can use right now but she's been unresponsive for days." He shook his head and studied her, "brain activity has been zero. The other doctors wanted me to call any emergency contacts to make a decision."

Devon turned on the doctor, "What decision?"

I placed a hand on his arm to calm him down, "Devon, he's just doing his job, back off." I whispered, he looked at me and softened slightly.

"What decision, doctor." He repeated, a lot more polite this time.

Doctor Vikhram cleared his throat, "If her brain activity doesn't increase in the next seven days we will have to ask you to choose between keeping her on the life support... but risk causing severe neurological damage should she ever come back round, or to stop the life support and call it." He said it all so casually, it's like it's a discussion he has with families and loved ones daily. I couldn't imagine delivering news like that to someone, ever. Let alone for a career.

Devon squared his jaw and nodded.
"You have my contact details, correct?" He asked, Doctor Vikhram simply hummed his answer, "fine, I'll contact the hospital regularly to see how she's doing, if anything changes you let me know right away. If not, I'll see you in seven days." He mumbled, grabbing my hand and leaving.

   Seven days.
I need to start praying for a miracle.
I've seen how these things go.

And if we lost Meghan too, I don't think we'd ever recover.

   I don't think he'd ever recover.
