Chapter 7
I was helping to clean the tornado of gift wrap, when Darren, Charlotte and James came strolling in with a fresh pile of presents. The twins, of course, were already storming downstairs and searching for ones with their names.
“Hey guys.” I said grinning at the sight of my friends. “Merry Christmas!”
“Yeah, yeah,” Darren pretended to wave me off, “Where are the pancakes?”
“Well that’s no way to greet us on a holiday! Sorry, dude, ya missed ‘em!” Shiloh emerged from the hall behind him, chuckling. Before he could turn around, she was on his back- piggy back style. Charlotte, James, Jake, Leo and I all rolled our eyes simultaneously at the obvious flirtation.
“Get a room!” Jake exclaimed with a gagging noise. Shiloh hopped off and threw a couch pillow at him.
“So how was your Christmas, Charlie? James?” I asked them as Darren and Shiloh went full-fledged into their own conversation.
“It was good, but I bet those pancakes would have made it even better…” James said, staring longingly at the barren kitchen table.
“Well mine has been wonderful so far, we have family in from out of state, and-“ She stopped and her face crinkled in confusion before she shook it off and walked a bit behind me.
“Hi! It’s Alec, isn’t it? Alec Paige? I’m Charlotte! We go to school together… How’s your holiday?” She asked happily. She knows his reputation, but this is her way of finding out why he’s here.
“Yes, and I’ve seen you around at school. I’m spending Christmas with Cadence and the Garrett’s this year… It’s a long story…”
“Oh, well… hiya! Merry Christmas!” She said and enveloped him in a quick hug, patting his back and handing him a round tin container. “If I’d known I would’ve gotten you something, but it’s a good thing I made extras!” He opened the tin and it was filled to the top with several types of homemade cookies.
“Thank you, Merry Christmas.” He gave a genuine smile and turned to me, his smile growing wider. When Charlotte began talking to Victoria, he walked over and put his arm around me, pulling me tightly to him. “Your friends are so… warm and gushy.”
“Gushy?”
“Yeah… I don’t know.”
“What?”
“It’s…. nice. I like it.” He said and we joined the group to watch another cheesy Lifetime movie before Charlie, Darren and James had to leave.
Surprisingly, no one really asked about Dashiell except James, who had asked where he came from, and what the little guy’s name was. I just looked at Alec who shrugged, so I told him his name was Dash and he was a close family member. He nodded and talked about how cute he was, but didn’t push it any further.
