When I woke up I was in hospital- no straitjacket, instead I’d been cable tied to the railings of the bed. My left arm was cramped from being in one position so long and my back was sore, though not quite as sore as it had been last time I’d been conscious. My right arm was free however it was in a cast and I vaguely remembered feeling it break against the wall of the alley as the bomb had gone off.

I looked around the room, it was light and spacious- I was surprised I wasn’t on the psych ward, or in a padded room. I wasn’t about to complain though.

I pulled the tubes out of my nose and felt it down the back of my throat, it made me gag briefly before I managed to drag it out along with a nice collection of mucus.

Next was the IV line in the back of my hand, I flinched as the end of the needle came out and I applied pressure to the spot.

“Ma’am, what are you doing?” A nurse had just walked through the door and I sighed, rolling my eyes at her blunt lack of observation, I had thought it would be obvious what I was doing.

“You are fully aware of what I am doing, I don’t plan on being in this bed much longer, I want my discharge papers and my personal effects returning to me.” She looked shocked for a second and her silence made me look up.

She was a middle aged, fake brunette-haired, overweight and possibly diabetic nurse, who appeared to have been in her job for about four years, judging by her stature and the familiarity of her movements to her and had the signature heavy breathing and complexion of an undiagnosed heart condition.

“I can’t do that ma’am, we need to keep you here for observation for at least another week-”

“-I have no intention of staying here for another week, in fact I don't have any intention of staying here for another day. I will need someone to call my Uncle, Detective Inspector Lestrade and ask him to pick me up.”

“I can’t do that Miss. I’m sorry but you’re going to have to stay here.” She turned and stepped out of the room. As she left I saw a flash of dark blue outside my door, a police uniform; it appeared that it was my uncle who was trying to keep me in here.

I looked around the room and stood, without the hindrance of an IV or any other kind of protruding chord, I was free to observe the room I’d been placed in and assess my ability to escape from it should I not be able to talk the policeman outside to call my uncle.

The room wasn’t overly large though it was obviously meant for more than just one patient. I’d never really been much of a public ward type person and I knew that my medical records showed it.

I tried each of the cupboards and finally came across an emergency kit in the cupboard to the left of the door and rummaged around inside it, trying to find something that at the very least would allow me to protect myself for the time being.

The best I could find was a small surgical scalpel and quickly sliding out of its protective casing and holding it between my last two fingers I proceeded to repack the bandages and plasters and saline solution into the kit and carefully stowed away the bag exactly the way I’d left it.

There was suddenly talking outside the door and I ran for the bed, leaping into it, ignoring my aching body and sliding the scalpel into my cast.

Not bothering to pull the covers up around me I lay there, on my side, my good arm under me, just managing to relax my body as I heard the entrant shut the door behind them.

They muttered to themselves in frustration as they drew nearer, the exact words failing to reach my ears. Struggling, I separated my eyelids just enough to glance through my eyelashes. I couldn’t see whoever it was; they had walked over to the side of the room my back was facing.
