The newly evolved pocket monster loomed before you. At first, you felt a pang of sadness that Numel had evolved so quickly, and you hadn't known him for very long. However, you were so enthralled about having your very own Camerupt friend that it seemed to cover up that sadness. He plopped himself down on the snowy ground, and the snow around his rear melted quickly. You were angry at yourself for thinking about the fact that this meant he literally had a hot ass.
"You must be the most wonderful pokemon I've seen. If the audience of a Hoennian beauty contest were all like me, you would be the winner each and every time..."
Camerupt looked a bit weirded out by this sentiment. He snorted and made his way over to the tent. As he was about the same size as the tent, it became clear that he would no longer fit inside. You cleared your throat.
"I guess you won't fit in there, huh?"
He turned toward you and gave you a "No, Really?" sort of face. You rubbed the back of your neck worriedly. Why did this situation feel awkward? He was the same Pokémon that had been traveling with you.
"Since we can't camp here, why not leave Circhester and explore the Wild Area? It's a vast place, and so many different environments lie within. Does that sound good?"
He looked at you blankly.
"I'll take that as a yes! C'mon, Camerupt!"
At this point it occurred to you that you did not have a name for your beloved Pokémon. You had addressed him formally, simply by the name of his species, from the moment you got him. But what name would suffice for such an extraordinary beast?
"Before we leave, I need a name for you if we're going to get to know each other," you said softly. He paid no heed.
You sighed. Had he always acted this blunt? No matter. Perhaps it would be most effective to call him something simple, for the irony of such a simple name for a beautiful creature would be powerful. Plus, it might be easier to say.
"I think I'll call you... Cam. Yes! Is that okay with you, Cam?"
He did not look at you, but snorted.
"Awesome! C'mon, Cam! We'll be off to the Wild area soon."
You gathered up the camping gear and managed to stuff it into your bag, which was ridiculously small in comparison. Then you grabbed Cam's Poké ball.
"Ready?"
You tossed it at him and, to your surprise, he whipped around and slammed it back at you. The ball went whizzing past your head at quite a high speed.
"Hey! What's the problem??"
He simply snorted again.
You ran into the snowy trees surrounding your camp and retrieved the ball.
"C'mon, Cam, let's go."
But his posture indicated that he was in no mood to enter the Poké ball. He was poised and ready to whip it back.
"Okay, fine. You can walk with me for now, but you gotta get in the ball when we enter the flying taxi. Heh— a Corviknight couldn't tow you around all day!"
He swiveled his head toward you and you regretted saying that. Man, if looks could kill...
You motioned to him and he trotted at your side as you walked in the direction of central Circhester. He was silent but the snow crunched under his heavy hooves. This continued on for minutes, and it was absurd how incredibly awkward it felt. Cam was acting different, wasn't he? He was acting friendlier back when he was a Numel, right? But surely that was impossible... he was still the same creature, just in a different body. You looked at him. His eyes were pointed straight ahead, paying no heed to anything aside from his destination.
"This'll be fun, won't it?"
Once again, he snorted. You could feel the heat from his nose that time. It warmed your legs.
When you got to central Circhester, a flying taxi was already waiting near the Hero's Bath. The Corviknight had its head tucked tightly into the wreath of steel feathers around its neck. You greeted the driver and told him your destination, and then turned to Cam.
"Be good and get in this time," you whispered to him. You grabbed the Poké ball and touched it lightly to his fur. He made no attempt to resist this time.
You climbed into the taxi and as the Corviknight flapped its powerful wings, wind swirled around the car. It lifted slowly off the ground. When you were finally in the air, the driver called to you from on top of the bird Pokémon.
"That's a nice Camerupt you have there, miss. He looks like a sturdy one. Is he well behaved?"
"Yeah, he is..."
You looked out the side of the car at the rapidly passing scenery as you and the taxi disappeared into the sky.
