Akses didn't like Cassius Patel.

Not in the beginning, at least.

Cass wasn't easy-going, but he was easy to get along with. The only problem was that girl.

Gabriella wouldn't be into Cass, no matter how hard he tried. She did like The Infernal Devices, though she didn't have a crush on Will or Jem, in fact, she envied them.

Akses didn't want to break Cass's heart. Well, he did, but he wanted to do it directly. He wanted to crush his dreams, watch him suffer, and feast upon the melancholy that would be his shattered heart.

Though that was the problem. Akses desperately wanted to feast on the soul of a miserable mortal, but he seemed to have taken quite a liking to the man who had summoned him.

Akses hated himself. Cass was pathetic, short, and quite stupid. But something about him, his determination, his emotions, his humanness, drew him in.

The thought scared him, more than any punishment in Hell did. Akses did not like being afraid, and he did not like this new feeling. A feeling that coiled itself around where his heart would be, suffocating him with adoration and dread of what might come.
