"If you don't want to be stuffed into your locker, stay away from the Janitor. How is that so hard for you to comprehend, Newbie?"

"He kidnapped me from home!"

I chuckled as I studied the x-ray in front of me on the light-up board and listened to the asinine conversation taking place at the other end of the hallway.

Carla stopped and entered the empty exam room I was standing in. "Grace, I've been looking for you." Her attention was immediately caught by the x-ray in front of us. "What is up that man's –"

"A plastic slap-on bracelet," I answered before she could finish her question. "Don't ask. You do not want to know. I wish I didn't know." I gave an involuntary shudder. "I'm waiting on Turk because it's going to take surgery to get it out."

"Just wow," Carla shook her head.

"Why were you looking for me?" I reminded her why she was there.

"Oh, yeah," Carla braced her back with her hands. "Jordan was telling me the other day that you guys are taking the kids trick or treating in your new neighborhood. Would you mind if we tagged along with Izzy?"

I understood why she was asking. The Turk family lived in an apartment. About a month after we brought Nathan home, Percy's realtor had found us a reasonably priced five-bedroom house in an older historic neighborhood on the outskirts of the city. We'd moved in two weeks earlier, and we were nowhere near unpacked.

"Not at all," I shook my head. "You're about to get off, right?"

"Yeah," Carla nodded.

"Me as well. I'm taking the kids' costume shopping and out for pizza for supper. Do you want to bring Izzy and tag along?" Percy was on call all night, and Jordan was out of town, so I wouldn't mind the extra company so that I wasn't the only adult on the outing.

"That'd be fun." Carla smiled. "Turk's working tonight anyway," she told me what I already knew.

The man in question appeared at that moment.

"Baby, I'm taking Izzy and going out with Grace after work," Carla informed her husband.

"Cool." Turk smiled and put his hands on his hips. He clearly could not have cared less.

"Yeah, I'm about off myself. This guy's all yours." I handed over the chart and pointed to the x-ray.

I was barely out of the room when Turk realized what I had just saddled him with. "Grace, you are an evil, evil woman!"
