Porco Galliard

Porco had inquired with the nurses about Elsabeth's whereabouts upon seeing that her room was desolate, hastily learning that she had taken up vigil beside Reiner's mending, slumbering form to await his inevitable awakening. He promptly searched them out, because of course Elsabeth escaped her room the moment that her pain was dulled by medication, blatantly disregarding her orders to take a few sanative days to just breathe and recover.

Porco stopped dead in his tracks, though, taken aback by the sight he was met with in Reiner's room. Elsabeth's ivory skin was cleansed, the blood long since having been scrubbed from the lower half of her face and hands. The ruby-soaked clothes had been discarded, replaced by immaculate robes, and the gunpowder and grime had been washed from her raven tresses. The only evidence of the turbulent battle was how she was pale as snow from the pain still buzzing through her being.

He quirked an eyebrow in bewilderment as Elsabeth released a heavy sigh and let her head drop to where she clung to Reiner's flaccid hand. "You fucking idiot," she whispered, her features blue, despondent. "We need you."

I need you.

Those three colossal words hung in the air, unspoken but still carrying a great weight that perplexed Porco. He couldn't wrap his mind around Elsabeth's peculiar attachment to Reiner, because it was his odious actions that had left her mind fragmented.

Laden with this knowledge, she had forgiven him, had opened her heart and treated him with as much kindness as she did with everyone else.

She was more forgiving than Porco would ever be, because Porco abhorred Reiner enough for the both of them. Despite this, he coaxed Elsabeth into returning to her room with the promise that he would remain by Reiner's side as he dozed. The door clicked shut behind her, but Reiner showed no reaction in his deep state of sleep. Porco fell into the seat aside his bed with ease, setting down a steaming ceramic mug and his bag. He pulled out his unfinished report and a sandwich, but both sat on the desk, idle, untouched when amber eyes caught on the silver ring that adorned his finger, causing a memory to flash behind his eyes, unbidden . . .
