The next day went relatively the same.

Amara and Peter snacked on some berries, and walked almost always completely silent.

Neither of them said a word about what Amara did.

If they did talk, it was either about the story of how she got each of her rings, their lives before the whole incident, and random facts they had about themselves.

Their feet were sore enough to the point that they couldn't even feel them anymore. They couldn't smell the stench both of their bodies gave off. And the hope of finding anything was so small that the both of them, though they didn't say it out loud, knew that they were going to die in that forest.

Not to mention, the berries they were eating weren't exactly enough to be a water source. Amara's throat was the driest it had ever been - another reason for their limited speaking. It hurt too much.

If they couldn't find a way out soon, they weren't going to make it.

Amara had even used her power to climb on top of a tree, just to get a better view. And she saw the exact same thing she saw at the top of the Remedy base - trees, and mountains covered in trees.

When she squinted her eyes, she could see the base way off in the distance. The only information they had was to keep walking away from it.

There still wasn't any contact with Charles. Not even the slightest hint. Both mutants could only hope that everyone else was okay.

The leaves crunched under Amara's feet as she continued forward, her eyes flitting around as she continued to scan the forest around them. She could hear Peter not too far to her right, who, luckily, wasn't limping anymore.

When Peter's movements led him to step closer to her, Amara ignored the urge to step a little closer to him as well.

Instead, she kept her eyes on her shoes, which were extremely torn up and almost completely covered in burs. One of them even had a stick poking out of it, but she couldn't even tell if it was hurting her anymore.

Kahuna, It whispered. Move in closer.

For fuck's sake. She couldn't catch one break. Not one. No. No, she will not move closer.

But, Kahuna-

Shut up.

But-

"No!"

It would be so easy. You should've let me last night, just one little slip and everything-

"I said, no!"

She angrily rubbed away at the black stuff oozing out of her skin. It had reassured that there wasn't much left, but that didn't make her hate it any less. She just wanted It to stop. All of It.

We had him. He was right there. We could have had him.

Her anger shot from five to a hundred in less than a second, and her teeth were gritting. "Shut. Up."

Just think-

"No."

Kahuna-

"NO!"

"Amara?"

"What?!" She turned around so suddenly she almost ran into Peter, who was standing right behind her with nothing but a concerned expression dawning his face. Her breathing was heavier than she anticipated it to be.
