Remus is not drunk. Absolutely not. What a ludicrous idea, that.
And asking Lily if she liked James or not in a game of truth or dare involving the seventh year Gryffindors and Hufflepuffs was not a drunk accident. It was a well thought-out idea that definitely did not just jump out of Remus' mouth. Definitely took him at least a week to plan it out.
Even if refusing James' Potter's advances was practical Lily's career at this point.
And Lily is looking at him like she's going to murder him on the spot.
Actually, she might wait until no one's around. To hide his body and all. Lily's smart like that.
Alright, so maybe Remus is a little drunk.
And so what? He's been stressing over his exams for months, and now that they're finally over, he can afford to let loose a little.
The thing is, Remus knows Lily's into James. He knows this because Lily told him (She tells him everything). And they barely have two weeks left at Hogwarts. As soon as they get their grades, they'll have to leave. If James and Lily don't get together now, when will they?
Remus blinks a couple times.
"Come on, Evans," Sirius laughs from beside Remus. "Yes or no, it's that simple."
Remus turns back to Lily. She's still glaring at him, cheeks as red as her hair. "Yeah, it's that simple, Lily," a Hufflepuff girl grins.
The Hufflepuffs aren't even supposed to be here in the Gryffindor common room.
"I..." Lily huffs, "I d—"
The thing about playing Truth or Dare with the Gryffindors is that if you pick Truth, you have to say the truth. One could argue that the Muggle way is no different, but here in the Gryffindor common room they take it a step further.
By Gryffindors, Remus mainly means Sirius. Because he was the one, on one fine Friday night in fifth year, to declare that anyone could just lie their way out of it... Unless...
"Bring out the Veritaserum!" Someone yells, and Remus, the designated Veritaserum keeper, reaches down to fish a vial out from a weathered cardboard box.
"Go on, then," he smiles innocently at Lily.
Lily looks like she wants to refuse. But with an annoyed huff, she grabs it anyway. Lily would throw herself off a cliff before refusing a dare. Or a truth, in this case.
Still looking murderous, she uncorks the vial and swallows it down. It's diluted—Sirius managed to find the perfect ratio of water to potion with the help of his brother and James—so that whoever drinks it wouldn't be deprived of their skills of deception for too long.
She takes a deep breath, closes her eyes, and opens them again before exhaling.
"Yes," she says, her voice straining. "I like him. I have for a long time, actually and—" she turns to James and jabs a finger in his general direction. "And if you say one word about it after this game, I swear by Godric that I'm going to turn your head into a pumpkin."
