The Mayor's POV:
*Timeskip to a month later: August*I sit behind my desk in my office at City Hall, sharpening my tenth pencil today.
Being the mayor of a small town is not easy as you think it is; making sure that everything here is normal and not out of place.
Every day, I make sure that everyone is doing what they're good at; being normal and going about their business. And make sure that nothing out of the ordinary is bothering them.
I guess you can say that last part is out of the question since there is something here that's bothering me and my town! That freak that lives in that freaky house in the woods, he's nothing like the rest of us. And that, I simply cannot allow! I'm gonna find a way to kick him out of here one way or another.
But now he's not the only thing I'm having a problem with. It's that new girl, the one that just moved here. Kelsey Carlyle. There's something about her that seems a bit...fishy.
Why does she wear such dark clothes? And why are they always long-sleeved or a jacket, like she thinks it's always Autumn or Winter? And why is her hair so pale that it's almost white?
She's hiding something, I know it. I can feel it.
"Meredith!" I call out to my personal assistant outside of my office as I turn towards the window behind me, staring out at the town. At that moment, I hear the frantic pace of heels coming into my office, and I briefly look over my shoulder. Meredith, a woman in her early thirties and wearing eyeglasses, professional clothes like I am and her long red hair up in a tight bun, stands in her place in front of my desk, and I continue to listen to the sounds of her high heels clicking against the floor.
She's been my assistant since I was elected mayor, and for as long as I can remember, she's always been a huge help, yet, she puts on way too much makeup and can be quite a handful.
"Yes, Mr. Mayor?" She asks me as she approaches the desk, her voice soft yet a little high, almost to the point where it could annoy a man the second she opens her bright red lipstick-painted mouth.
"Any news on the freak lately?" I ask, not tearing my gaze away from the townspeople, my people, as they go about their business.
I can hear the fear in Meredith's voice as she speaks, "U-Uhh, no, sir. Except last week, some of the local children claimed that they saw him near the town square."
"Is that all?" I inquire, squeezing my fists by my side. How dare he try to go near the kids!
"Yes." She says.
"Good. Oh, and Meredith? Do you know about the new girl here?" I ask, looking at her over my shoulder.
She takes a moment to think, her painted fingernail tapping her chin. She then shakes her head, "No. Wait! Is she the one from the conference last month, the one with the really light blonde hair and dark clothes?"
I nod my head, "Good girl. You do."
"What about her, sir?" She asks me, sitting on my desk. I fully turn around to face her, my hands behind my back. She has an intense look as we stare deep into each other's eyes, like always when we're alone together.
"I have a special job for you to do; I want you to follow her around and watch her. See what she does during the day and lend me some information about her. I know that she goes to college now, but I need more than that. I must know more about her."
At first, Meredith looks resistant to the small job, but after seeing the determined look on my face, she slowly and obediently nods her head. "Will do, sir. But why her? From what I've heard recently, she's super quiet and reserved, and she doesn't fit in at al—" She stops in mid-sentence, letting it sink in, and her mouth forms a small "o" as she finally gets it.
