This mission was one of the worst he'd ever been on, Obito decided. The air was weird, his sensei was oddly tense, and the sleeping girl on his back was snoring loud in his ear.
He wasn't normally a complainer, but fuck this mission sucked. They had been walking for a day before they even took their first break. And Rin kept giving him weird looks, which she'd never done before. He snuck a glance at Kakashi who seemed to be in his own world, as usual. Obito wasn't surprised no, but he was surprised by his actions earlier. It was very out of character for the bastard, and it made Obito's eyebrows crease a bit.
He felt Naruto's weight shuffle on his back, so he assumed the blonde girl was waking up. She rubbed his hair before hopping off his back and continuing to walk. Obito was getting used to her being overly touchy now, but that didn't stop his blush. Such a small touch too, man, he was definitely a loser.
The sun was setting and it ruthlessly burned against their open skin. And Obito just wanted to destroy the dumb ass bridge and get out of here. He could name a list of things he could be doing, and this was not one of them. His sensei, even though he was looking forward.. seemed to read his thoughts.
"This mission is extremely important to the war, Obito. That is why they gave it to us."
Obito blanched, his sensei's ability to read thoughts was really creepy. It had to be a Kekki Genkai or something. Obito turned to look at Naruto, who'd surprisingly looked the most into thought about what Minato said.
It worried him, no he didn't still think she was a threat to the village, well..
It was only normal. She "appeared" out the sky, if he was going by what the villagers told him. She's a good ninja, he could tell. But if he'd never seen her in the academy before, then why did she have a leaf headband? These things just never made sense to him. He'd never really been the thinker of the group, but this had his gears turning.
Also, what the fuck was with her energy? It was extremely distorted, and it threw Obito on edge at first. Minato seemed not to notice it, so he assumed he was wrong. Minato was one of the best sensors in the village. Nothing would get past him. He wouldn't admit it, but a thought in the back of Obito's head disagreed with that statement.
——————————
By the time they were getting close to the mission, his team looked completely melted. Obito related to them deeply, and looked at Naruto from the corner of his eye. The girl was still walking at the same speed, seemingly not tired out. This made Obito sweat violently, there were a lot of strange things about her.
"Alright," His sensei finally spoke up, "For this mission I am putting Kakashi in charge, it will be good for your battle experience." Instead of Obito, Naruto looked like she wanted to disagree with that. So she did. "I don't see how that is true, when Kakashi isn't emotionally intact." Rin gasped, Minato's eyes widened and Obito had to cover his mouth to hide his grin.
Kakashi's eyes narrowed, and his voice sounded like ice. "And who's to say that I'm not emotionally intact?" Naruto scoffed, "If you had a mission to save either Minato or the mission, which one would you choose?" Kakashi went to answer the question without a beat, but Naruto held her hand up to his face. "If you're going to say the mission, I don't want to hear what you have to say. A real ninja would never leave their teammates. Consider yourself a phony." Obito grabbed her outstretched hand, and led her back down the path.
What she said was respectable, though. Her words reassured him greatly, and every doubt about her swam away. He thought along the same lines, his grandma had told him something like that, and it stuck with him most of his life.
Naruto very well was a respectable ninja, Obito decided. He found himself looking at her with new eyes, a pair of eyes that Minato noticed. "Obito, if you're done being lovey dovey, it's time to start the mission. Naruto you're in charge." Naruto nodded sharply, and Kakashi stayed silent. Obito silently felt bad for the boy, not that he would ever tell him that. But seriously, the bastard needed some self reevaluation.
—————————
They were fighting several Iwa ninja, and the thrill of it all was enticing enough. Obito rarely got to go all out, and he was finally releasing some steam that he needed to let out. He looked over at Naruto, and found his jaw dropping. Her fighting style was completely unorganized, and he found himself for-seeing her death. Shaking his head, he looked at Rin.
Well, he thought he looked at Rin. Where the hell was Rin?!
"Hey guys, where's Rin?" Kakashi scoffed, "Still not over your crush?" Obito sent him a nasty look, "This is serious, she's missing!" Kakashi didn't look alarmed at all, and Obito was beginning to get sick to his stomach. He felt a hand on his shoulder, and reached for his kunai but the person stopped him.
He turned around to only see Naruto, and sighed out in relief. Holy shit, he was paranoid. The girl looked at him for some moments before speaking. "Let's go find Rin." Kakashi finally voiced his thoughts, and he voiced them quite strongly.
"No, we need to complete the mission. It's not my fault she can't handle herself. She should be grateful she was gone here instead of on a more important mission." Obito's blood was boiling, just who did he think he was, God?! Naruto's grip on his shoulder tightened. "Your sense of loyalty to the wrong thing will soon be the end of you, and your village." The only time Obito had heard her say something wise like that, was back at the Monuments. He noted to himself to think this over later.
"You can fight here, but me and Naruto are going to find Rin. Those who abandon their mission are scum, but those who abandon their team are below scum. I would have thought your father would have taken the time to teach you that." Obito glowered at him, before running off, leaving Kakashi frozen. Naruto nodded at him, and sent a reassuring smile, and took off after Obito.
—————————
So, they were in a cave. No big deal, but they found Rin before they could make her a Jinchuriki. They were fighting, and the battle was long and harsh. Minato sure was taking his sweet time, and Obito swore the ninja infront of him split his sweat drop in half. They were doing pretty good fighting though. They had taken out most of them. And Kakashi had come around, and was seemingly friendlier. He was slightly grateful to that. His team was on a rocky start, but it seeming everything was becoming good again. One of the Iwa ninjas muttered something, and they all ran out at once. Naruto looked at the entrance to the cave, then at Obito with fearful eyes.
Thinking quickly, she held up a sign and muttered shadow clone Jutsu. Obito very quickly realized what was happening, and threw Kakashi and Rin to the exit.
There were at least a hundred copies of Naruto in the cave. The original, jumped to him and her clones packed all around them. Obito soon saw her plan, and hugged the girl tightly. What if she hadn't come to the mission, would he be under the rocks?
A golden chakra glowed over Naruto's body, and Obito's eyes widened. He was seeing golden chakra. It was extremely mesmerizing. Golden arms shot from Naruto's back, and the rocks around them began to get removed. Obito found himself ruffling her hair, and widely smiling at the blonde girl. He owed her his life.
