Chapter 1
Kaz

Kaz hated school. The teachers who always gave him pity looks. *Oh how sad that poor boy has had an awful life. Just awful,* they'd say.The smirks and giggles when he limped by on a particularly bad day with his cane. But the worst thing was the hallways. They were always so crowded and Kaz was too stubborn to ask for "accommodations". The feel and heat of all the bodies crowding around him made him sick just thinking about it. One time someone stumbled into Kaz and it took everything in him to not break down on the spot. He hurried into the bathroom and stayed there shaking and crying for almost an hour.

Kaz doesn't have many friends, or people that he really considers a "friend". Inej Ghafa, Jesper Fahey, Nina Zenik, and Matthias Helvar are those people. Nina and Jesper are always trying to crack a joke and make everyone laugh. They have a bet on the first person to make Kaz laugh, get 100 bucks from the other. They think Kaz doesn't know, but he knows everything. Nina and Matthias are dating. They sure are a strange couple but it works for them.

Inej is about the only person that understands him. At least understands him as well as anyone really can. He doesn't understand why, but she's there for him. She doesn't really talk much to a whole bunch of different people, but she's really smart. She's one of the only people that Kaz feels is close to as smart as he is.

"Pssssst."

Kaz decided to ignore that annoying pestering.

"Pssssssst Kaz" The pestering continued. This was one of the few times that the whole class was quiet while working on independent stuff, and ofc Jesper had to ruin it.

"Kaz kaz kaz kaz kaz kaz kaz kaz kaz kaz ka-"

"What Jesper." Kaz whispered aggressively and turned around in his chair abruptly making a scraping noise come from his desk.

"Um well-" Jesper looked at Nina, who was sitting at the desk next to him, nervously. She shrugged and jesper turned back to kaz, "What are we supposed to be doing." He smiled sheepishly.

Kaz looked at him and Nina for a second. "Figure it out yourself." He turned back to his work and rolled his eyes.

Jesper sighed and turned back to Nina. Kaz couldn't hear exactly what they were saying but he assumed it was about the work that they were doing. Class began almost an hour ago, and they still didn't have a clue on what they were doing.

When the bell rang, Kaz held back, taking his time putting everything in his backpack. Jesper hesitated in going out the door and looked at Kaz.

"...You want me to wait for you?" Jesper asked, glancing briefly at his gloves.

Kaz shot him a look that said I'm not a child I can handle myself. Jesper shrugged and headed out the door.

Kaz started going out the door after everyone left class. He always stays close to the wall by the lockers. He got to his locker without any incidents and opened it. As he was grabbing the stuff he'd need for his next class, he felt a presence next to him. Inej he thought.

"Hello Inej." He said without looking at her.

"Kaz" She greeted

"Any information you have for me?" He slammed his locker shut and started walking away, Inej falling into step beside him. The school has learned that it's best to stay out of their way when they are walking together.

"Not much. Although, I found out that Mrs. Phillips is cheating on her husband with Mr. Jones , and her and her hus-"

"Inej." Kaz interrupted.

"Right. No gossip other than that'' She knows that Kaz hates to call it gossip. He thinks it's too girly.

Inej knows everything about everyone. She's very sneaky and inserts herself into conversations. Kaz likes to know what is going on at all times. It's a good system.

They walked in silence to Kaz's next class, Inej occasionally waving to someone she knows.

When they reach Kaz's class he stops and looks at her, "When it's lunchtime, sit at our usual table, and get me a drink. Water."

"Please?" Inej crossed her arms and looked at him.

Kaz sighed, rolling his eyes, and shifted his feet, "Please my darling Inej, would you do me the honor of acquiring me a bottle of water."

Inej smiled, "Have a long boring class." She turned and jogged down the almost empty hallway to her next class, her long hair trailing behind her. Kaz felt his cheeks heat up slightly, and shook his head. Stupid.
