~ Chapter 15 ~

My body was still recovering after two days. My lungs hurt from coughing so much and my throat was scratchy. I could feel that my face was still puffy from the sea water and my body was itchy from the salt.

Charles wasn’t doing much better. he only left his room once, and that was to shout orders to the crew members who have been chugging rum for the past few days.

Nothing is better than having a crew that was constantly throwing up over the side of the ship while you are recovering.

I got out of my bed and looked at my reflection in the mirror.

Yikes! My hair was a curly mess of… everything. Sighing, I pulled my hair back with a piece of fabric and walked out to the upper deck. The now sober crew greeted me and I returned their greetings with a head nod.

“‘ello Aria!” shouted Johnson from the steering wheel.

“Hi Johnson!” I walked up to where he was and gave him a hug. “How’s the Captain doing?”

“I think tha’ it’s up to ‘im now,” Johnson replied.

I thought for a moment. “I guess that makes sense.”

Many things are mental. You can either convince yourself that you are too sick to do anything, or you can convince yourself that you’re better.

It was starting to get dark out, so the crew called it a night and started to resign to their sleeping quarters. I got my knife out of my boots and threw it into the main mast, the blade digging into the mast. Then I started to climb. My arms burned and my body started to sweat. I lost a lot of my strength from being sick, but I kept climbing.

I finally made it to the top and climbed inside the crows nest. The wind was picking up and it felt good on my hot skin. I took my hair out of the ponytail and felt it being pulled back as the wind whipped through it.

I heard movement below me and I saw Johnson leaving the steering wheel.

Weird. I thought. The wheel is never left unmanned.

I shook off that thought and sat down. Drifting off a little; my body was beat.

I woke with a start as a thud sounded in front of me. It was pitch black out, so couldn’t have been asleep for long. I squinted my eyes to try to see what that sound was. I grabbed my knife in my hand just in case and started to slowly stand up.

But then a lamp was lit and I dropped my knife when I saw who it was.

“Charles,” I whispered.

“Aria,” Charles said breathlessly. Then he hugged me and I hugged back harder than ever.

“Thank you,” Charles said into my shoulder.

“For what?” I asked.

“For saving me.” The he kissed me. This kiss was different then all of the rest. It held so much passion and love that was so indescribable. His hands caressed my face and my hands gripped his shoulders, pulling him closer. I bit his lip, making him moan, and then I smiled into the kiss. We pulled away after a while, out of breath.

“I love you too,” Charles said breathlessly.

I was confused for a second. “You heard me?”

“Yeah,” he chuckled. “I was just so exhausted that my body couldn’t react.”

I laughed outloud and then hugged him again. “I’m so happy that you’re better.”

“I’m not one-hundred percent, I can feel that much. I could barely climb up here. But I feel good enough to maybe gain a little bit more control over this ship again.”

“Good,” I said. “The crew is out of hand when they don’t have a captain to control them.”

He laughed again. A real laugh. I almost cried because I missed his laugh so much. We fell asleep together up in the crows nest. My head was on his shoulder and his head was resting on mine. It was perfect. I couldn’t have asked for anything more.
