Gwen sat next to Duncan in Mrs. Silk's classroom for detention. The teacher wasn't even in the room who was supposed to be, he was too busy chilling in the teacher's lounge while the kids goofed off during their three hour detention session. Their were a lot of people in detention that day, there had been a sudden increase when Courtney became hall monitor.
" Ugh," Gwen sighed shooting a paper football through Duncan's hand goal," I could be on a date with Trent right now!" Duncan shrugged it off as Gwen put her hands up creating the end zone. Duncan rolled his eyes, Gwen was his friend, which Trent had a hard time gripping.
" You could do better," Duncan stated, missing the goal, passing her short hair. Gwen laughed and punched his arm.
" I could not, he is the nicest, most sensitive, talented guy I know!"
    " I feel rejected."
" Shut up," Gwen taunted punching him again, pushing him onto the floor. He dragged her down on top of him, to their content. They laughed hysterically side by side on the stone floor. They rose again, back to their seats and began playing paper football again. After about fifteen minutes of that, Courtney walked in wearing her hall monitor sash and presidential pin. She glared at all of the criminals, then spotted Gwen and Duncan laughing sitting too close for her liking, especially since Trent wanted her to keep an eye on Duncan, not so much Gwen, since he trusted her.
" Court, again, really?" Gwen said a bit aggressively as she strutted over to the two desks pulled close to each other.
" Awfully close," Courtney pointed out.
" We were playing paper football, do you or Trent trust me at all?" Gwen stated offended, standing up. Her and Courtney rarely fought, but ever since she started hanging out with Duncan, Courtney was being all unfaithful toward Gwen.
" Trent and me trust you, it's Duncan we don't trust!" Courtney retaliated. Gwen glared angrily.
" So now you don't trust my friends, what do you now think I have bad choices in friends, or that I hang out too much with Duncan, cause that's how unfaithful I am toward my boyfriend, who I will remind you has been dating me for a YEAR!" Gwen yelled loudly causing the entire cast of detention to turn their attention toward the girls.
" Gwen, that's not at all what I'm saying, I'm just saying-"
" That Duncan's a bad influence, that he is a delinquent, he's untrustworthy, I hate how you and Trent insist that I like Duncan and that I'm cheating on Trent, HELLO, everyone at school knows this stuff Courtney, WE ARE JUST FRIENDS!"
" I know, but this is all Duncan's fault, he is tearing you and Trent apart!"
" Why is it always about Duncan, you have to drag him into all of Trent and me's problems, go be Trent's little body guard, but I've just about had it with this lack of trust." Gwen yelled angrily, almost letting out tears. Courtney looked angrily back at her and stomped away. Gwen started to cry and Duncan pulled her in for a hug. She cried into his shoulder, feeling the pain in her breaths.
" Okay kids, you're free to go," Mr. McKee said opening the door to let the kids out," You too Duncan and Gwen." Duncan lifted Gwen up and wiped the tears off of her face.
" Hey tell you what, we can go out for ice-cream, my treat, at Galileo's, come on," Duncan said, looking into her eyes. Gwen perked up a bit, but still shed a few tears. They walked out to the parking lot to Duncan's motorcycle. Gwen's house was walking distance of the school, so her black 2005 Honda Element rarely left the driveway of her house. Gwen strapped her book bag across her shoulders watching Duncan place the keys into the ignition. " Hop on pasty," Duncan said, placing his helmet over his head. Gwen sniffed in and wrapped her arms around Duncan's slim torso. He popped on a helmet for her, and began driving to Galileo's ice cream parlor, the small hipster ice cream shop on an unknown street. Gwen still felt tears streaming down her face, she hated to fight with Courtney, and this is more serious than her other fights. She felt like Duncan was the only one she could really talk to that completely trusted her. They pulled
slowly into the parking lot of Galileo's. Gwen popped the helmet revealing her red face. Duncan pulled off his helmet and grabbed Gwen's hand and dragged her into a hug. She placed her face into his chest, fumbling over what to say. His warm embrace made Gwen feel like everything was going to be okay. They finally let go looking at each other, making Gwen laugh. They walked into the shop, which was small and had very little people in it. It had peeling walls of beige. Booths by the window and tables against the walls. Then there was a small counter leading into the ice cream freezer. Duncan's friend owned the shop, and always liked Gwen when she came in, which wasn't often anymore. The lady at the counter had half her crazy red hair shaved, which was short on the opposite side. Behind a smiling face filled with silver caps, was a pair of icy grey eyes and deep tan skin.
" Duncan, Gwen, it's been too long!" the woman said reaching over the counter hugging the two.
" Hey Christa, one strawberry with chocolate syrup and sprinkles and one rocky road with sprinkles," Duncan said, memorizing Gwen's favorite combination. Gwen smiled, nudging him for remembering. Christa exited into the freezer to grab their ice cream. Gwen sniffled a bit as he dragged her to a booth. They sat on the same side of the booth, close.
" Come on Gwen, it'll all work out," Duncan insisted. Gwen smiled, shooting a happier stare with a pair of dark grey eyes.
" Thanks Duncan, but she's probably just jealous," Gwen said sarcastically, knowing that they both liked each other.
" Jealous hmm, so she likes me?"
" Dude, don't act all surprised, and also don't deny an attraction to her."
" I'm not attracted to that little princess, she's uptight, and she made my best friend cry!"
" Shut up Duncan, you two so like each other!"
" Yeah okay," Duncan mumbled, not fighting that he had a bit of an attraction toward Courtney, but hearing that he liked her back was sort of comforting.
" Yo, you two crazy kids, here's your ice cream," Christa shouted. Duncan stood up grabbing Gwen's strawberry waffle cone, and his rocky road sugar cone. Christa smiled at the sight at the two. She was wondering how much longer they were going to deny liking each other. Gwen licked the strawberry mixed with jimmies and chocolate syrup, which was a taste she had been craving. Trent knew her favorite flavor was strawberry, but never knew she liked waffle cones and chocolate syrup. Everyone at school, other than her group of friends, thought she was just a creepy Goth girl. Trent texted Gwen as her and Duncan laughed and ran around the café, but she never returned the text, due to not hearing the slight vibration of her Samsung Galaxy.
" That was fun," Gwen panted out of breath. She rested her elbow on Duncan's shoulder, placing her pale fist on the table. Christa watched smiling, Duncan so liked her.
" Yeah, well, it's getting late," Duncan yawned, after a tiring round of Running around the parking lot.
" Yeah, maybe we should go home," Gwen suggested grabbing her jean jacket she had brought. Duncan nodded and grabbed the helmets and his jacket.
" Later Christa," Duncan and Gwen yelled in unison as they bopped their heads out the door. Gwen's face was no longer red and wet, it was now back to it's original pale state. She placed the helmet on her head, followed by Duncan doing the same. They slickly rode down the dark lit roads until they hit the main highway, lit by car headlights. After a couple minutes of driving, Duncan pulled up Gwen's house, stopping at the curb. Gwen hopped off, placing her helmet in Duncan's hands. He placed his on the seat of his motorcycle.
"Thanks for buying me ice cream, that means a lot," Gwen said happily, hugging Duncan warmly
" No problem, I hope you and Courtney make up, I'll talk to her for you though."
" Yeah so you two can admit your feelings?"
" Shut up!" Duncan exclaimed, punching Gwen in the arm, causing Gwen to retaliate the motion back. They looked at each other for a moment, seeing the other's reflection in their eyes. They smiled warmly. As soon as Gwen could see it, she felt Duncan grab her arms and begin to lean in to kiss her. Gwen couldn't pull away, and without her mother barging out the front door, they would have been making out. SHE ALMOST KISSED DUNCAN!?
