The date with Trent went off without a hitch. A picnic in the park under an oak tree. Their oak tree. Of course there was kissing, but nobody wanted to hear about that. Gwen walked with Courtney, who seemed happier than ever.
"Doesn't the sun just look lovely?" Courtney said in a gushy voice, walking up the stairs of the school.
"Someone's whipped," Gwen said sarcastically, heading through the doors, making her way to the cafeteria to get herself a cup of coffee.
"Maybe someone is..." Courtney continued, spinning in circles occasionally.
"Good for you Court," Gwen said, her eyes focusing on the floor beneath her dark boots.
"What's wrong?" Courtney asked, standing next to Gwen as she ordered her black coffee.
"Nothing, I'm just a bit tired is all..."
"Fine, whatever, I'm going to meet Duncan in the courtyard, have fun with your coffee!" And in the blink of an eye, Courtney was gone. Gwen let out a long sigh, taking sips of her coffee. She wasn't jealous of Courtney, heck, she was happy that Duncan would no longer be the reasons behind her fights with Trent.
"Morning pasty," a familiar voice said from behind her. She whipped around, spotting Duncan leaning on the back of Gwen's chair. Gwen held back her urge to scream.
"Morning to you too," Gwen rolled her eyes as Duncan sat down across from her. In his hand was also a black coffee, which probably no one but them enjoyed.
"What's up?"
"The real question you should be asking is why you are here and not with your girlfriend..." Gwen said calmly, taking another sip of her coffee, leaving a dark black lipstick mark around the edge of the cup.
"Courtney isn't my girlfriend, we're just friends, with benefits," Duncan winked in assurance, taking a bite of the bagel he had also purchased, "plus I wanted to see you, ever since we've been together, I haven't had time for you." Gwen laughed, even though her stomach felt like exploding. She knew if Duncan didn't go out to the courtyard, Courtney would have a fit.
"So, are you excited for the 'World Tour'?" Gwen asked plainly.
"No, I'm not one for these team building exercise nonsense," Duncan sighed, rolling his eyes at the question.
"Hey it could be fun..."
"Yeah, no," Duncan said simply, "this is going to be a nightmare." Before Gwen could retaliate the remark, a voice came upon the loudspeaker.
"All students that have Geography, please come to the auditorium as soon as possible!" Mrs. Byrnes happy voice rang through each student's ears. The only reason Gwen had to dislike the idea of a competition was that Trent wasn't in Geography, leaving her with Leshawna and Courtney as her only hope. She didn't know how she would do with Duncan, considering how her feelings were tied into a big knot. Duncan and she began to walk to the auditorium, causing some strange looks from the peers that lined the halls. Gwen felt the eyes directly towards her. The judging looks of the two Goth kids walking together, who happened to be in item with two others at the moment.
"Let's go, I really don't feel like being here right now," Gwen mumbled, causing Duncan to nod and fasten his pace. The two of them continued down the halls, ignoring the ever so judgmental looks of their classmates. Even though it seemed like a decade away, they got to the auditorium, stealing two seats in the back as the lecture began.
"Hello students! I, Mrs. Byrnes, am so excited to announce that this geographic competition will be this school's greatest competition to date. So, as competitions go, this will be a competition of strength, mentally and physically as you battle it out through different challenges for each area of our 'world tour'! Teams will be determined by how well you do in the first challenge. Once the teams are decided, each challenge will be a TEAM EFFORT! Every challenge will have one winning team and one losing team. Eliminations will be held where your teammates will decided on who was the least helpful to the team and be voted out of our little race! But don't worry, the eliminations will not be the only thing factoring into your grade. After you are eliminated, you will help me and Chef Hatchet set up each challenge for the rest of the competition. Once there is a certain amount of you left, we will merge the teams and it will be every student for themselves. When there are two of you left, you will be challenged in the final competition for a special prize of a small amount of money! So, tomorrow the games will begin, but first let me give you all-"Mrs. Byrnes explained, then got cut off by the slamming of the auditorium door. Mr. Priest. The music teacher. He was probably the worst teacher in the school. He taught at the school longer than everyone there, even Principal Mclean. He hated when younger teachers got some big thing for them to do.
"Mrs. Byrnes, I have a small problem with this little competition, it seems that these students will be strictly learning Geography when they should have other subject matter to learn. It will benefit the students greatly if we require each of the challenges to have a spontaneous musical number." Every student let out a moan or a gasp. If singing was now a requirement, their grades would be utterly jeopardized. "I've already spoken to Principal Mclean for his approval, I guess we will be working together on this lovely project." Mrs. Byrnes eyes became thin, a glare in the direction of their persistent music teacher.
"Alright students, you may head to your first period class," She growled. Duncan and Gwen got up, only for Duncan to slap his head.
"If this competition didn't already blow, we're now required to sing," He groaned, running his hands through his neon green Mohawk. Before Gwen could make some snarky remark, Courtney ran up to Duncan, placing her hand on his shoulder.
"Duncan, you didn't meet me at the...oh Gwen?" Courtney said, hearing the restraint of total rage bubbling up from him not sitting with her.
"Hey Court, sorry, I was just leaving..." Gwen said sheepishly, rubbing the back of her neck, heading out of the auditorium, her eyes not leaving the ground. Then, as she exited, she bumped into Trent, whose face was not friendly.
"Gwen, why were you eating breakfast and then walking to class with Duncan?" he asked, lifting her chin to look him in the eyes. Gwen was surprised. She wasn't apologetic, she was angry.
"Are you kidding me Trent? How many times do I have to tell you that Duncan and I are just friends," Gwen yelled, drawing a bit of attention to them, "relationships are built on trust, and you have none for me. I'm sorry Trent, but I can't be with someone who doesn't trust me."
"What are you saying?"
"It's over Trent."
