As Kyo waited, he felt his mind clouding with emotion and negative thoughts. 'What if they can't save her?' He thought. 'What if I'll never see her again? What would everyone say?' Tears began to blur his vision as even worse thoughts popped into his mind. 'What if everyone blames me for her death?...'
'Looks like the cat's slipped up again.'
'Don't you even care?'
'You KILLED her!!'
The thoughts ceased whenever he heard footsteps walking towards him, he instantly jumped up and looked at the doctor. "Is she okay?" Kyo asked worriedly, he hoped Tohru was alright. She couldn't be dead.. She couldn'tbe! The surgeon was ominously quiet for a few minutes. "Mister Sohma... Come into my office for a second..." The redhead nodded and followed the doctor to a close-spaced area with a desk in the center of it, covered with paperwork and things that belonged to the doctor.
"Sir.. is...is Tohru okay?..." The doctor stayed motionless and quiet for what seemed like hours before he replied in a mutter. "I'm sorry...Mister Sohma... but Miss Honda... she..." He looked straight into Kyo's eyes with a somber face. "...She didn't make the surgery..." At the words, Kyo chokingly gasped out loud unintentionally. "Wh-Wha-?" Tears begain to well up in his eyes again, but in more abundance.
"She, at first, seemed perfectly fine... but then she started to bleed internally... Apparently the heart and a few other vital organs were scathed as well as the muscle." The man sighed. "...but we didn't realize that until it was too late..." With his face towards the ground, Kyo sobbed quietly and clenched his fists. "If it makes you feel any better... she died peacefully. And... she left us a message for you."
As he heard this, Kyo snapped his head back up. "A m...message?..." The doctor nodded. "She asked us to record it for you. Would you like to hear it?..." Hesitant at first, Kyo answered. "Only if I'm left alone to hear it..." With a nod, the man turned on a tape and quickly made his way out of the room.
Kyo's eyes stayed watery as he listened to the message. It was Tohru's voice... but it sounded weak...
"Guess I couldn't pull through, huh?" She laughed weakly. Her slightly warming voice was silenced, and after about ten seconds she continued. "There's something I've always wanted to tell you, Kyo..." In the background on the recording, you could hear a heart monitor slowly dropping in beats as her voice grew weaker and quieter. "It's that... I've always... always..." Tohru's voice shook, as if she were crying as well. "I..I love you... an-...and I always will..." The heart monitor became very slow by now, and Tohru sounded as if she were about to pass out. She sat crying for a minute, before he heard her last words.
"Please remember..." Then the long, high-pitched sound played as Tohru took her last breath and lived through her last moment. That's where the tape ended. Kyo had his head in his hands as he cried his eyes out, letting the water soak into and drip from his hands. "R-Remember what?... Wh-What do you want me to remember??.." His questions gripped at his heart and brain, making him just want to fall asleep. But he knew he couldn't... He had to go home and tell everyone... Tell everyone about the accident... Tohru's death...
....And how he couldn't save her from it....
