I was sitting in a grey room with a two way mirror in front of me. I stared down at my hands, and only glanced up when someone opened the door and stepped into the room with me.
“Hello, Sen.” He greeted, pulling up a chair. My eyes were heavy as I looked up at him. He was somewhat tall with silver hair swept to one side, and a mask covering the majority of the side of his face.
“My name is Kakashi Hatake. I’ve been assigned to your case.” He explained. I didn’t say anything as he placed some paper on the table beside of me.
“I guess I’ll start with the simple questions… do you know of anyone who would want to bring harm to your family?” He asked, I shook my head, not looking at him.
“... Do you understand that your father was a member of the Hokage’s counsel, and that there were a lot of people that disliked him?” He asked. This time I met his glance, and sat back in my seat.
“I knew he was important… but I didn’t think anyone disliked him enough to…” I answered truthfully, unable to finish the end of the sentence.
“Who was it…?” I asked, and he shook his head.
“We’re not sure yet… but I have one other question for you.” He said.
“Did your parents once ever tell you that you’re adopted?” He asked. I blinked a few times, unable to register what he had just asked.
“I’m… adopted…?” I mumbled, my voice breaking. He remained quiet, probably taking my reaction into account.
“But… if they weren’t my real parents… then who-”
“We’re not sure of that either… but… we believe that they knew what was going to happen.” I sunk low in my chair as my heart began to flutter uncontrollably.“You mean… they knew this would happen…? Is that why… they sent me to the academy only just today…?” I asked, and he nodded.
“That said… we’re putting you under the supervision of the KWPP. Whoever it was that did this… intended to kill you as well. So for your protection, you will need to be relocated immediately to a different home within Konoha. You will be watched constantly by a special team until whoever it was that did this is captured.” He explained. I wasn’t thinking about myself at this point though. They knew… they knew this was going to happen… and they still protected me… my hands clenched tightly in my lap as my bangs covered my eyes.
“Sen, you’ll be staying here for the next month.” He said, sliding a small piece of paper towards me. I glanced at the address and slipped it into my pocket.
“There’s one other person living there, and he has already agreed to let you stay… we’re going to take care of you, alright kid?” He asked. I stood from my spot and waked to the door.
“...Let’s go then. I need to get some sleep. It’s a school night after all.” I mumbled. Kakashi blinked a few times before following me to the door, and leading me out. We were out on the streets again, and I glanced to my right at the charred remains of the home I had believed would be there forever. The family I had believe to be real… Kakashi placed his hand on my head, making me turn my head forward to keep from looking at it.
“Don’t look back.” He said, placing his hand on my shoulder, and glancing down at me with his one eye. I looked straight ahead as he kept his hand on my shoulder until we got to the front door of an apartment room. Room C74 at the end of the hall… I’ll have to remember that I suppose… I looked away as Kakashi knocked four times. the door opened moments later, and I came face to face with Sasuke. I didn’t even seem surprised, I felt too numb and too drained to be surprised.
“Come in.” Sasuke said, pushing the door open for me to walk in. I took a step and felt as Kakashi placed his hand on my head, and ruffled my hair into a jumbled mess. I glared at him as he looked down at me in an understanding way.
“I’ll be by to check up on you every once in awhile.” He said, and I nodded, continuing inside. Sasuke closed the door behind me, and I just stood there as he approached me in an awkward manner.
“Your room is to the left down the hall, and mine is just across from it. The bathroom is on the other end of the hall, here up front is the sitting room, and the kitchen is on the other side of that wall.” I looked back and forth, but didn’t say anything.
“Why don’t you take a shower?” He asked, and I nodded as he led me to the bathroom. He pointed out where the towels and cloths were, and said something about putting some clothes out for me on my bed. I nodded through all of it, not really bothering to answer him at all.
I stripped out of my clothes after he left and jumped in the shower, cringing as the cold water fell onto my unready skin. It gradually became warm, and I slid my back down the shower wall, and curled into a ball to cry away all the tears I hadn’t already cried.
*later that evening*
I stepped out of the bathroom wrapped in a fluffy towel, and proceeded towards the room that was designated as mine. As promised, there were some clothes on the bed waiting for me. I quickly changed into them and took a seat on the bed, looking out the window as the sun was setting lower in the sky. My door opened quietly as Sasuke stepped in with a bowl of hot rice.
“You should eat something… you haven’t eaten since lunch.” He said. I took the bowl and sat it in my lap before returning my attention to the window. The bed sank slightly as he took a seat beside me hesitantly.
“I was… going to show him my shuriken technique…” I mumbled, referring to my dad.
“But… it turns out… he wasn’t even my father to begin with… so… who was I really trying to impress all that time…?” I asked.
“The only thing you can do now… is move forward.” Sasuke said, and I continued to look out the window.
“It’s stupid and pointless… I keep… wishing that it’s all a nightmare… that I’ll wake up in my bed any second now, and…” Sasuke remained quiet as I tried to find words to say.
“Thanks for the food… but I don’t think I can eat anything right now.” I admitted. He nodded, and took the bowl.
“I understand…” He mumbled, and stood from his place on the bed, and walked to the door quietly as I went to lie down on the bed.
“I’ll see you tomorrow.” he said, before closing the door behind him. I sat awake for what seemed like forever before fatigue finally got the best of me.
